PATENT 1 OFFICE.
CHARLES PAQNESSA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,539, dated. August 23, 1904. Application filed May 2, 1904. Serial No- 206,022- (No modeld To all whom it may concern.-
.Be it known that 1; CHARLES PAONESSA, a citizen of the United States, residing-at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
This invention relates to improvements in barrels, casks, and the like.
The object of the invention isto provide a hinged end portion and an inclosing or'encircling member for the end of the barrel or the like for retaining said end portion in a fixed position when mounted within the barrel and said inclosing member is moved to its locking position upon the receptacle.
Another object of the invention is. to improve the construction of a receptacle of the class hereinafter described which is provided with means for closing the ends thereof, said means comprising a hinged top and an end hoop hinged to the receptacle contiguous to the hinged portion of the top.
With these and other objects in view the inventionconsists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1. is a perspective view of a barrel or the like to which is attached my improved construction of closing means for one end thereof, the head and hoop being shown removed from in their normal closed and locked position. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of a barrel or the like, the top and the fastening-hoop therefor being in an assembled closed position with the barrel,
. said barrel and closing member for the end thereof being shown in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a receptacle constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 designates a barrel or like receptacle which comprises in its construction a plurality of staves 2, which are retained in an assembledposition by means of hoops 3, which are mounted upon the staves 2 in the ordinary manner known to one versed in the art to which the present invention relates. Upon referring to the drawings, Fig. 1, it will be obvious that the upper-end of the staves are not surrounded and inclosed by meansof a stationary hoop, but are left free, and therefore permitted to have a slight resilient action forthe purpose, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Formed upon the upper inner wall of the barrel at 1 is a groove, which is provided for the reception of a stationary portion 5 of the top when the same is positioned in an assembled position with the barrel. Preferably formed diagrammatically opposite to said groove is an extension or bracket 6 of any preferred construction, said extension being formed upon the inner wall of the receptacle and having its upper edge lying in the same horizontal plane as the bottom of member 5 of the removable top 7. Top 7 is hinged to member 5 at 8, and upon its upper surface suitable "gripping means 9 is secured. An
end hoop 10 is hinged to the barrel upon its outer surface adjacent to the portion thereof which is provided with the groove or recess, within which member 5 of the hinged removable top is normally secured. For the purpose of retaining the hoop and hinged top in an assembled locked position upon the receptacle a suitable locking mechanism (illustrated in Fig. 2 at 11) is employed.
When it is desired to place the hinged top 7 within the barrel, it will be necessary to first insert section 5 thereof into the end of the barrel in the position shown in the drawings and subsequently forcing the hinged top or head into the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby causing the same to engage the member 6, which is formed upon the inner wall of the barrel, for the purpose of limiting the downward movement of the head or top.
mit of the hinged top or head to ride down into its normal seated position, and when the same has obtained such position the ends of the staves will close together, and hinged hoop 10 will then be pivoted forward and moved to a closed position upon the end of the barrel similar to the disclosure in Fig. 2, and it will then be necessary for the purpose of insuring of the top or head and the hinged hoop being retained in a fixed locked position to employ the locking mechanism 11 or any other suitable means. The lockingmechanism 11 comprises in its construction a staple secured to one of the staves and a hook pivotally mounted upon the hoop 10.
When it is desired to examine or exhibit the contents of a device employing the improved construction described, it will only be necessary to swing the hoop out of engagement with the staves, and by gripping the member 9 the removable top can be withdrawn from within the end of the barrel, or if it is not desired to entirely remove the top or head 7 it may be positioned similar to that depicted in the drawings, Fig. 1. By means of this improved head and the cooperating hoop therefor the receptacle can be used without defacing any part thereof, as is ordinarily the case where it is necessary to destroy the head or hoop, which is secured upon the ends of the receptacle.
Of course it will be obvious that if it is desired each end of the barrel or the like may be provided with a head constructed in accordance with the present invention; but I have preferably shown and described a barrel or receptacle constructed of staves having only the head or top thereof provided with my improved construction. a
While I have described in the foregoing description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings the preferred construction of my invention, I desire to reserve the right to make any alterations, modifications, and changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the present invention, as it will be obvious that the same principal of operation and construction may be resorted to in the construction of devices in accordance with the present invention Without departing from the spirit and scope of theinvention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a receptacle comprising a plurality of staves, a hoop or the like mounted upon said staves intermediate their ends, a removable, hinged head mounted within said receptacle near one end thereof, and a hinged hoop mounted upon said receptacle and inclosing the ends of the staves of the receptacle within which the head is mounted for positively retaining the same therein.
2. A device of the characterdescribed, comprising a receptacle provided with a rigid body portion and an expansible end portion, a removable head mounted within said end portion comprising a stationary section and a hinged section secured thereto, a hinged, encircling member mounted upon said end portion, and means for positively locking said encircling member in a lixed position upon said end portion.
3. In a device of the character descri bed, the combination with a barrel, or the like, provided with an expansible end, said barrel having a groove formed upon the inner wall of said end and an extension, a removable head mounted within said flexible end comprising a stationary section normally engaging said grooved portion, a hinged section secured lo said stationary section and normally engaging said extension, a hoop hinged to said flexible end contiguous to the grooved portion thereof, and means for locking said hoop, when in a mounted position upon the flexible end of said barrel.
4. In adevicc of the characterdescribed, the combination with a receptacle, of a sectional hinged cover removably mounted within said receptacle, and pivotal encircling means socured exteriorly of said receptacle adapted to positively retain said cover in a locked position within said receptacle, when said encircling means is in its normal position.
5. Adevice of the characterdescribed, comprising a receptacle having an expansible opened portion, a removable cover adapted to be sprung into said opened portion, and a member hinged to said receptacle and adapted to encircle the end portion thereof for retaining said cover in a fixed position.
6. A device of the character described, comprising an expansible end, inclosing means mounted within said flexible end comprising a stationary section, a movable section secured to said stationary section, and a movable member pivotally connected to and encircling said end for retaining said cover in a .fixed position.
In testimony whereof I. hereunto allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
