Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. PURvIs, a citizen of'the United States, and a resident of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat, Hat, and Umbrella Racks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in coat, hat, and umbrella racks.

It has for its object the provision of means adapted to support a hat, coat, and umbrella and be locked, so as to prevent theft when employed in public places.

It has for a further object to provide a device of the character set forth embodying advantages in point of simplicity and inexpen siveness of construction, durability, strength, and perfect operation.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the device in full lines in closed position and the pivoted arm in dotted lines in open position. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of. the overlapping bars.

In the figures of the drawings-illustrating my invention like reference characters designate corresponding parts.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a vertical supporting-plate provided with holes for the insertion of screws or nails to adapt it to be secured to a door or in any desired place. An arm 2, integrally formed with the plate 1, extends forwardly and upwardly therefrom and is provided with a ball 3 on its upper end, adapted to support a hat, and below said ball with an inwardly and upwardly extending hook 4, adapted to receive the loop on the back of a coat, and thereby support it. The inner end of a horizontal arm 5 extends between a pair of cars 6 and 7, integrally formed with said plate 1 at the uper end thereof and extending inwardly therefrom. To pivot the arm 5 and also permit a reciprocal movement thereof, the inner end is provided with an elongated slot 6, and a headed bolt 7 passes therethrough and throughholes in said ears and has its inner end flanged. A bar 8, integrally formed with the arm 5, depends downwardly therefrom and overlaps an upwardly-extending bar 9, formed integrally with the arm 2, the inner ends of said bars being recessed, so that when overlapped their surfaces will be flush. An ear 10, provided on the lower end of the bar 8, is adapted to pass through a slot 11 in the lower end of the bar 8 and be engaged by a the arm 5.

The pivoting of the arm 5, so that it has a reciprocal movement is for the purpose of allowing the car 10 to be forced opposite the slot 11 should it not come opposite said holes when the arm 5 is swung around to lock it.

The operation is as follows: It being assumed that the device is locked and it is desired to hang a coat, hat, and umbrella thereon, the padlock is removed and the arm 5 turned to one side, the articles hung thereon, and the arm 5 again turned back and the padlock again attached and locked.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters' Patent, is

1. A device of the character set forth, comprising a plate having a rigid forwardly and upwardly extending arm, a laterally movable pivoted arm adapted to be moved over the end of the rigid arm, a bar extending downwardly from the pivoted arm, a bar extending upwardly from the rigid arm and means for locking said bars together and thereby locking the pivoted arm, substantially as described.

upwardly extending arm, a laterally-movable I pivoted arm adapted to be moved over the end of the rigid arm, a bar extending upwardly from the rigid arm and having a slot in its end, a bar extending downwardly from the'pivoted arm and having an eye adapted to engage the slot in the other bar, and means for engaging said eye to lock said bars together and thereby lock the pivoted arm, substantially as described.

3. A device of the character set forth comprising a plate having a rigid forwardly and upwardly extending arm, hooks on the forwardly-extending portion of said arm, a hook on the upwardly-extending portion of said arm, a laterally-movable pivoted arm adapted to be moved over the end of the rigid arm, a bar extending upwardly from the rigid arm, a bar extending downwardly from the pivoted arm and having a hook extending ICC downwardly between the hooks on the forwardly-extending portion of the rigid arm and means for locking said bars together to lock said pivoted arm, substantially as described.

A device of the character set forth com prising a plate having a rigid forwardly and upwardly extending arm, hooks on the forwardly-extending portion of said arm, a hook on the upwardly-extending portion of said arm, a laterally-movable pivoted arm adapted to be moved over the end of the rigid arm, a bar extending upwardly from the rigidarm and having a slot in its end, a bar extending downwardly from the pivoted arm and having a hook extending downwardl between the hooks on the forwardly-exten ing portion of the rigid arm and an eye adapted to engage the slot in the other bar, and means for engaging said eye to lock said bars together and thereby lock the pivoted arm, substantially WILLIAM R.
