THEODORE WESTERMAN, OF 'NEWVARK, NEW JERSEY.
FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,537, dated April 18, 1893.
Application filed January 11, 1893. Serial No. 458,004. (ModeL) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE WESTERMAN, acitizen of the United States, residing in Newark, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FasteningDevices; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in fastening devices or supports for clothes lines, lamp brackets and the like.
It consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device, showing the removable plate locked within the base plate or frame. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the removable plate partly removed and the looking device thrown back. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a top plan view of Fig. 1.
In the drawings a represents the base plate or frame of the device, provided on one side of its upper end with a projecting lug b. To this lug b is pivoted by a pin 0 or in any suitable manner the swinging arm CZ, of the latch c. This frame a is recessed or channeled as at n (Fig. 4) to receive the plate f, which is beveled on its sides as at m and adapted to slide in said frame a. To the face, or projection 9 on the face of this plate fis secured by screw thread connection or in any suitable manner a hook it, to which the clothes line is attached. It is evident that a lamp bracket or any supporting bracket may in like manner be secured to the plate f. The upper end of the plate f is notched as at 0 on the side adjacent to and adapted to receive the latch e and be locked thereby within the frame a. I
The frame or base plate a may be secured to the support for the device by means of screws 70, and for the purpose of cheapening the construction and makingthe frame lighter, without interfering with its strength, said frame may be recessed as at 1..
In operation the latch e is thrown back on its pivot into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the plate f slid in the channeled frame a. The latch e is then thrown over, its end entering the notch 0 of plate f, as shown in Fig. 1. WVhen the latch is in the notch of the plate and the plate is slightly raised the latch swings outward until its lower corner engages the vertical wall of the notch 0, which prevents further movement of the latch .in an outward direction and prevents further upward movement of the plate, thus preventing the withdrawal of the plate f from the base plate or frame.
It is obvious that any number of frames a may be used in conjunction with one or more of the sliding plates f, as for instance in case the same is used for a clothes line support,
when the window sill may be provided withtwo frames a, so that when the line is taken in, the sliding plate may be removed from its connection outside the house and slid into and locked in the unused frame on the window sill. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the channeled frame plate permanently secured to its support, a removable plate notched at its upper end and adapted to slide into said channeled frame plate, and a hook attached at right angles to said removable plate, with a latch pivoted to the upper end of said frame plate and adapted when thrown over to engage the notch in said removable plate and thereby lock it in and to said frame plate, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of January, 1893.
THEODORE WESTERMAN.
