SHUTTER BOWER AND FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application filed August 20, 1906. Serial No. 331,391.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY ZIMMERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter Bowers and Fasteners, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention relates to that class of shutter bowers and fasteners having sill plates, hooked brace rods and catches pivoted to the shutter, and consists in so constructing the parts that the shutter may be locked either in an absolutely closed or in an approximately closed position, and so as to automatically elevate the brace red, as fully set forth hereinafter, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my shutter fastener, as applied to a sill and shutter Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22, Fig. l with the shutter in one position; Fig. 3 is a side view of the parts shown in Fig. 2 with the shutter closed.
The sill plate A is adapted for attachment to the sill by any suitable means and has a shoulder a formed by the inside of a lip or rib b, as shown, and this sill plate has the usual extension 0 with bowing sockets for the end of the brace rod B, which is pivoted to the inside of the shutter C, as usual. To the shutter is also secured the bracket 0 of a catch E having a hook 6 with an inclined face and an abrupt shoulder, as usual, and also having a loop f for the reception of the hook g of the brace rod. As usually constructed, devices of this class are so formed that the shutter can be properly locked only when absolutely closed against the sill, and while it may be bowed in different positions by means of the brace rod fitting the sockets s it is necessary to thus bow the shutter in case it warps to such an extent that the hook e of the catch will not engage the sill plate. To overcome this objection I so construct the parts that the shutter may be locked by the hook of the catch tight against the sill, as shown in Fig. 3, the hook of the catch being so arranged that when the shutter is against the sill the shoulder of the catch will engage the shoulder a of the sill plate, but I so construct and arrange the parts that when the shutter is slightly opened as in Fi 2, the brace rod 13, resting upon the catch with its hook 9 extending through the loop of the catch, the said hook will engage the said shoulder of the sill plate with the hook of the catch outside the said shoulder.
Without limiting myself to the precise arrangement and construction of parts shown, I claim:
1. The combination in a shutter bower and fastener of an inside hooked brace rod, a sill plate having a projection with a shoulder, and a pivoted latch with a hook and a loop beyond the hook for the passage of the hook of the brace rod; the parts arranged to afiord a bearing on the said shoulder for both of the said hooks when the shutter is in different positions.
2. The combination in a shutter bower of the sill plate L-shaped in cross section to present an inside shoulder a, and a pivoted latch with a loop adapted to receive the hook of a wall rod, and a hook between the pivot and the loop and with a flat face adapted to engage the shoulder a, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY ZIMMERMAN.
