DOOR LATCH. No. 286,935. V Patented Oct. 16, 1883.
PATENT Erica.
DOOR-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,935, dated October 16, 1883,
Applicationfiled Muy18,1853. (Modeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. LEE, of Oswego, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Door-Latches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
. exact description thereof, reference being had two positions by the aid of full lines and dotted lines. Fig. .5 is a detail view of a modification.
This invention relates to novel improvements in a faceplate having a looped guard, in combination with a slotted lever, which is adjustable over or beneath the shank of the latch, for the purpose of locking iteither up or down, all of which will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in 1 connection with the annexed drawings.
The
combined latch and lock which I am about to describe is an improvement on the devices which are described and claimedin my Letters Patent numbered, respectively, 250,551, of 1881, and 260,693, of 1882. V
A designates part of a door-frame having a vertical beveled strip secured to it, to which isfastened a wearing catch-plate, a; and B designates part of a door to which my improved device is applied. 011 the inner side of the door, at a suitable point, I rigidly secure a face-plate, 0, having aslot, I), through it, which registers with a corresponding slot through the door, and also through abearingplate, D, secured to the outside of the door. The plate 0 is formed with a looped guard, c, for the lockor axis of motion of the latch. thus applied'is not only active, but 1t is G designates a lever-latch, which is constructed with a hooked inner end, (shown at h.) for the purpose of engaging with the wearing-plate a. It is also constructed with a thumb-piece, i, a fulcrum-notch, j, aseginent, 7c, and a notched lug, Z. The notch j engages with the edge of the slot through the bearingplate D, which edge afi'ords the fulcrum for the latch G. The segment k, which is formed on the shank of the latch opposite the notchj, is designed to prevent displacement of the latch from plate D, and the notched lug l is designed for holding one end of a helical spring, S, the opposite end of which is held by a similar notched lug, Z, which is formed on the back of the bearing-plate D, as shown in thesectional view, Fig. 3. I
It will be observed that when the spring S is in its place it assumes the form of the are ofa circle which is concentric to the fulcrum The spring securely held in place, and by this mode of applying it a spring-box or a large mortise in the door is rendered unnecessary.
When it is desired to lock the door, the tongue (I of the locking-lever E is adjusted over the shankof the latch. "When it is de sired to render the latch inactive, the tongue (I is adjusted beneath the shank of the latch, and when it is desired to release the latch the locking-lever E is drawn back, so that the tongue (I does not engage with the shank of the latch. These three adjustments are allowed by providing the locking-lever with the T-shaped slot e.
It will be observed that Ihave arranged below the locking-lever a thun1b-picce, T, or fulcrum, which may be a knob or ahook adapted to afford a ,purchase for the thumb when it is desired to lift the latch by said locking-lever;
It is obviousthatthelocking-lever may have more than one notch springing from its longitudinal slot, and that the handle or lip Z may form an integral part of this lever, or be a separate piece secured to it in any suitable manner. I may use a spring in combination with the drop-latch, if desired. I do not confine myself thereto. 4
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Letters Patent, is my own I affix my signature in presence of The c0n1binati0n,with alever-latch, 0f aslottwo witnesses. ted face-plate, a loop or guard, c, and a locking- FREDERICK J. LEE. 5 lever constructed with longitudinal and trans- Vitnesses:
verse slots, substantially in the manner and VVM. HOUOK, for the purposes described.
D. V. SHIRLEY
