DOOR SEQURER. I
No. 504,207. Patented Aug. 29, 1893.
WITJVESSES- I INVENT'OR fl m Cid/"7e; WI. zaa/y er,
I I Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. FOWLER, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,207, dated August 29, 1893. A pplicationfiled May 2,1893. Serial No. 472,751. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Do'or-Securers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of the device with door and door jamb in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device unlocked and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of same in locked position.
- c, of semi-oval This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in door securers, the object being to provide a simple and effective device of improved character for fastening any door so that it cannot be opened from the outside, which may be readily carried in the pocket, and which is equally applicable to either right or left hand doors to which it may be quickly and easily applied; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the device consists of two parts, a jamb plate A, and a bolt or look B. The jamb plate A consists of a narrow oblong piece of metal, one end portion of whichis bent at substantially right angles, and beveled to form a wedge-shaped point. Midway between its ends, the plate is formed with two angular recesses b, one of which is cut in from each edge. At the end opposite the point a, the plate is formed with an opening or aperture form, with the straight wall at that end of the slot nearest the end of the plate, and projecting centrally into said slot from said straight Wall is a small lug or process d, which partially divides the slot into two parts. The lock or bolt B consists of a plate of somewhat triangular form, rounded at the apex, and having a straight base edge e. Formed in said plate is a longitudinal slot the width of which is but a trifle greater than the thickness of the plate A, with which to pass it in closing. The door is then closed,
and the boltBturned forward, and its straight edge portion e, forward of the slot f, is pressed into engagement with the notch b. By reversing the plate A, and turning the bolt over into engagement with the notch bin the other edge of said plate, the device may be made equally applicable to a left hand door. The purpose of the lug or process 01 in the opening or aperture 0, is to hold the end of the bolt up, so that it will present a straight bearing edge to the door, and can not tip backward. The slot (1 being only aboutthe width of the metal of the plate A, prevents any lateral movement of the bolt. The width of the bolt at one side of the slot f, from f to his greater'than the width at the other side from f g i. This is for the purpose of permitting it to go inside the molding, which is on some door casings.
The device as above described forms a convenient and secure look, as will be apparent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-- A door securer comprising a jamb plate A, having an arcuate opening or aperture in one end portion thereof, a lug or process projecting into said opening, a bent sharpened portion at the other end of said plate, and opposite notches or recesses in the edge portions of said plate intermediate of its ends, in combination with the bolt or lock plate B, consisting of a triangular-shaped plate, rounded at the apex, and having a straight base edge, alongitudinal slotin said plate B by means of which it is caused to loosely engage with the aperture or opening in the plate A, said plate B at one side of said slot being wider than at the other side, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in 100 presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES M. FOWLER.
