Patented July 23, 1895.

UNITEDi STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
HENRY H. OASWELL, OF NEWPORT, VERMONT.
WIN DOW-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,374, dated July 23, 1895. Application filed February 9, 1895.- Serial No. 537,825. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. CAsWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport,in vthe county of Orleans and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Vindow-Fastener, of which the following is a specification. p
My invention relates to an improvement in window-fasteners.
The object of myinvention is to provide a window-fastener which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong and durable, easily and quickly applicable, and which will accommodate the shrinkage of the window sash and casing.
My invention consists in a window-fastener embodying certain novel features and details of construction, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of avwindow-sash and the surrounding casing, showing the manner of applying my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of my improved fastener, showing portions of the sash and casing broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the window-fastener detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The trouble with window-fasteners as heretofore constructed has been that no provision was made for lateral motion or endwise movement thereof, for the purpose of accommodating shrinkage of the window-sash and the surrounding casing.
Referring to the drawings, l represents a flat metal plate provided with an elongated slot 2, extending lengthwise thereof.
3 represents an angular lip or extension, substantially at right angles to the plate l, said extension being notched or provided with an open slot 4, as indicated in the drawings, the portion of the extension outside of said notch or slot being in the form of a downwardly-extending lip 5, the purpose of which will appear. The notch or open slot 4 opens out downwardly, and is adapted to embrace, slide behind, and engage the projecting head of a screw 6, driven into the window-casing,
as indicated in Fig. 1. Another screw 7 is driven into the sidebar of the sash in approximately the same horizontal line with the screw in the casing, and serves to hold the fastening device in place upon the sash.
By means of the elongated slot 2 the fastener may' be moved horizontally until it strikes the window-casing, when by depressing thenotched extension or angular end thereof the notch 4 is caused to engage the screw-head 6, locking the parts together and preventing the window-sash from being swung open.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modificatlon 1n 'the form of my improved window-fastener,
which consists in providing the angular eX- tension 3 with a horizontally-extending lip 8 at right angles thereto, instead of the notch 4, above described. The lip 8 is'sharpened upon its outer edge and is adapted to engage and sink into the window-casio g. In order to prevent the Withdrawal of the lip from the window-casing, the end of the plate l opposite to that upon which the angular extension is formed is provided with a flanged rib`9 upon the inner face of the fastener, or that face which is contiguous to the window-sash. The elongated slot 2 in the plate l adapts the'fastener to be moved horizontally until the lip 8 engages the window-casing, when by tightening the screw 7 the fastening device is firmly clamped in position and the sash held securely and snugly closed.
Having described my invention, I claim- A sash fastener made from a single piece of metal, comprising va plate having a longitudinally elongated slot adapting it to be pivotally secured to a window sash and to slide longitudinally thereon, and an angular extension projecting at right angles thereto and formed with a vertically elongated slot left open at one end and adapted to pass over and engage a headed pin or stud on the window casing, in the manner and substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in 'the presence-of two witnesses.
Y HENRY I-I. OASWELL. Witnesses:
F. S. TINKHAM, P. J. FARRELL.
