Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM J. ROSS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IM PROVEM ENT IN DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 84,767, dated December 8, 1868.
To all whom t may concern@- Be it known that I, IVILLIAM J. Ross, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners and that I do hereby declare the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my doorfastener as applied when in use, and Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the same detached from the door.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a slotted metal bar, provided at one end with an adjustable bar or catch, formed so as to t in between the door, into which it hooks, and the door-frame, and supplied on its slotted portion with a sliding bar, provided with a set or thumb screw, and hooked' at its inner end, so as to engage with the inner end or edge of the door-frame, the object of the above arrangement being designed to furnish a cheap fastening for doors.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents ametal bar, provided at one end with an opening or slot, a. This bar is also provided with another slot, al, extending about twothirds of its length, and which is separated from the open end a2 of the said bar by a partition or piece, a3. B represents a catch or bar, consisting of two bars bent at right angles to each other, the vertical portion of said catch being formed with a projection, which is furnished on its lower side with a projection also, said projection being made with a knob, b, corresponding with the slot in the end of bar A, into which it fits when locked to said bar.
The horizontal portion of the catch B is proy vided at its outer end with a pointed projection, b1, which is designed to fit into a similar openingin thefront edge or facing of the doorO.
D is a sliding bar, which slides back and forth in the slotted portion of the bar A on flanges formed on each side of the slot a1, and is provided at one end with a set or thumb screw, b2, for securing the bar D therein at the desired point, allowing the said bar to be adapted to dierent-sized doors and frames. The opposite or inner end of bar D is formed into a hook, for the purpose of securing it to the door-frame E, as seen in Fig. l.
The object of leaving the inner end, a2, ofbar A open is topermit the bar D to be bent outward when desired.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Leb ters Patent, is
The slotted bar A, in combination with the catch B and hooked sliding barD, providedV with the thumb or set screw b2, all constructed, arranged, and operated substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature.
