Description
E. J. STEELE.
Improvement in Fastenings for Window-Shutters.
NO. 115,781. Patentedlune 6,1871.
UNITED STATES RATENT OFEEIGE.
ELBRIDGE J- STEELE, OF NEW BRITAIN, ASSIGNOB TO TURNER, SEYMOUR & JUDDS, OF WOLCOTTVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR WlNDOW-SHUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,781, dated June 6, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE J. STEELE, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented and made an Improvement in Fastenings for Window- Shutters, 8m; and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof.
My invention is especially designed as a fastening for inside window shutters and blinds.
The device heretofore usually employed for this object is a swinging bar witha hooked end taking behind a button or into a loop. With these fastenings a knob has also to-be used for opening or closing such blinds or shutters.
In my improvement a knob and fastening are combined, and the fastening swings in an ornamental case made in two parts, one on each blind or shutter, and the knob is turned to swing the fastening, and a spring holds the same, either shut back into the case or when reaching from one part of the case to the other, to hold the blind or shutter.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the fastening in place. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the side next the shutter or blind; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan at the line a: w.
The case is made of two hollow shells, at and I), screwed to place on the respective blinds, shutters, or other articles to be fastened. c is a swinging fastening, with the case a. attached near one end to the spindle of the knob (1, said knob being outside the case, so that the same can be used to turn the fastening, or as the knob for opening or closing the shutter or blind. Upon the swinging fastening c is a projection, 41, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and against this the spring 0 acts to hold such fastening in the position shown in said Fig. 2, or when turned back into the shell a, as shown by dotted lines. The end of the fastening c is made with a lip, and when swung into the .case b it passes through a mortise in the edge thereof and acts behind a projection, i, so as p to prevent the parts drawing away from each other by any pressure upon the blind or other article to which this fastening is attached.
This fastening is cheap, strong, ornamental, and performs the offices of both fastening and knob.
I claim as my invention- The fastening made of the two-part case a. b, knob d, swingingfastening 0, projection 02, and spring 6, acting upon the cam-projection i to hold the fastening closed oropen, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 11th day of April, A. D. 1871. V
ELBRIDGE J. STEELE. Witnesses:
GLDEON H. WELCH,
E. TURNER.
