IMPROVED SHUTTER-FASTENER.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, F. T. BROWN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Fastening \Vindowv in their place, when opened and turned back or around against the wall, so that it can be operated without the necessity of reaching the arm out of the window toloosen the blind, as is the case by the Aold method of having the catch-place at the outer edge.

lhe nature ofmyinvention consists in the employment of a bolt within the frame of the blind, in combination with a dog, upon which is provided a catch, also a spiral spring, arranged so as to operate or act upon the bolt. This bolt is located in the bottom rail of the blind, 'ruiming horizontally within the same.

. In the said bolt is made a gain, slot, or mortise, through which passes the dog, the latter of which is secured in a mortise made through the lower rail of the blind, and works upon a pivot, bolt, or pin.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A represents the blind, made in the common or ordinary manner, hung to the frame on hinges, in the common way. The blind, in Fig. I, is shown as being opened and secured to the wall of the building, by means of my improved device.

B, in Fig. II, represents a bolt, made of iron or other proper material, and may be of any suitable. form, so as to perform the functions designed. In the said bolt B is a slot or mortise, a, through or in which a lever, or dog, c,`works, which is secured and works on a pivot, bolt, or pin, o, the latter of which passes through the lip or ange t, made 4upon the plate D, Fig. I.

As the blind is closed, on the outer end of the lever or dog c is provided a catch or hook, n, for the purpose of fastening or engaging with an eye or hook, e,

attached to the wall, to secure the blind in its position when open or swung back.

Vhen the blind is closed, there is another dog o r hook, F, that works upon the same bolt or pin as the dog c, for the purpose of fastening the blind when closed.

G is a spiral spring, located at the inside end of the bolt B, and within the lower rail ofthe blind, in such position as to act directly upon the said bolt B longitudinally.

The operation is simple, easy, and e'ective, and

consists in placing the thumbs or fingers against th'e,

end of the bolt at H, (which comes just even with the edge of the stile of the blind,) which acts upon the dog c, and disengages it from the hook attached to the outer wall of the building, when the blind will close, and may be perfectly secured iu its place by engaging the dog F with the ping) in the'window-sill; and when it is desired to open the blind, the smaller catch or dog is disengaged, and the blind opens, 'thus making it one of the cheapest and mosteiicient and simple devices for this purpose known.

I do not cla-im broadly securing a blind in an open position by means of a bolt operated at the inner side of the shutter, but by devices passingon the outside of the shutter, that has already been applied to shutters; but v What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is

The bolt B within the blind, operating the dog c, in combination with the spring G, substantially and for the purposes set forth.
