v Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOHNSTON MILLER, of' Gettysburg, county of Adams, in the State of' Penn-v sylvania, have invented' a certain new and usefulImprovemcnt in Shutter-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specification, in which like parts are represented by like letters' inthe several drawings.

The nature of my invention consists inconstructing amctallic trigger, to he' located on the outer pertof the window-sill, to'be-Ioperatedlor released fromthe inside of the house, whereby to subserve convenience and safety, as hereafter to be described. l

To enable others to make and use my'invention, I willproceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the drawingsi v Figui-e1 represents a vertical section of awindow-fram, showing the fastening in the sill.

A represents an ordinary window-frame, B a shut-ter, and C the sill.- Aa. is the uietal piece attached to the shutter, having a hole in it for ya catch, b, to enter. D is a metal plate secured to the sill, and having a hollow raised projection, cZ. The projectingpart of plate a. enters the chamber formed -by d. .e andfare two lugs, projecting from under side of vD, the former being a mere guide-piece for the catch b,r`w h ilstfnot only'servesa. similar purpose, but is a support for a bent arm or trigger, vrE, which has a. limited rotaryAmotion. E has aprojectio'n, h, passing throug'bj', and turning in the same. b is secured to a spring, t', which is` fastened to D in any suitable manner. On the other side of b is a small arm, j, passing under the upper or bent arm of trigger E,

lthe lower end of which isl connected, in any suitable Way, with a. pull,P, inside of the window-frame, and extend ing into'the sin C.

The shutters can be shut or fastened .from thc outside or inside, without pulling the knob P, as the projecting part of a is curved, andistrikesagainst a similar surface on spring-catch, b, riding over l, depressing it'nntil it reaches the opening in the projecting' part of ct, when it. resumes its normal position, and forms a lock.

The position which trigger E assumes upon being pulled, so. as to withdraw catch 'b and permit the4 shutter 0r shutters tofbe opened, is shown in red-ink lines in Iig. 2, when the shutters can he opened.

This invention is capable of multiplied applications, for instance` a. window-sash, a door, a trunk, tc., lite.,

'without at all varying from the natu're of the dev-ice.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as nenn-and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is

The arrangement and combination, in a' shutte1fa`stening, of the pull P, bent armor trigger E, rod j, spring t', catch d, and plate a, with its projecting catch, operating in the'manner'as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.'
