IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDER.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLLAM A GORANFLO, of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvem entin Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,l which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

' This invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners, the object of which is to provide a simple and cheap device that will readily adjust itself to act as a lock, when the sash isshut down, and may be unlocked and adapted for a fastener for holding the sash at anyv desired point," by a slight movement by the hand.

hprovide an opening through the sash-stile, inthe direction of the face of the jamb, considerably'contracted at the centre, and insert a metallic case, or bushing, A, on the side next to the jamb, having an opening on its bottom, coincident with the contracted portion ot' the hole through the stile.

In this bushing, I introduce a. pawl, B, haviug the shoulders of the said contraction for a fulcrnm, and capable of sliding in and out, to some extent.

It is `provided with shoulders, C, which prevent it from being forced out too far, the said shoulders bearing against the bottom of the bushing.

To permit the raising of the sash, the pawl must be lirst raised out of the recess by the hand.

For holding the sash in an elevated position, the pawl is so adjusted in respect to its length between its shoulders C, which rest on the bottom ofthe bushing, and the inner end, that the friction of the said end on the jamb will cause it to bite thereon, and arrest the downward movelnent of the sash, by its pressure against the bottom ofthe said bushing.

It may be disengaged, for closingl the window down, by raising the outer end of the pawl.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The slidingpawl B, provided with the shoulders 0, and combined with the bushing A, substantially as specified. l
