Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP VERBECK, OF NEENAH, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVED WINDOW-FASTENING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. .64,60 l, dated May 7, 1867.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP VERBECK, of Neenah, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Window-Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
rIhis invention relates to a new and improved fastening to be applied to the sashes of windows, for the purpose of seeming the same at any desired point within the scope of their movement, securing them when' closed, and preventing them from being either raised or lowered when secured in a partially raised or open state.
In the accompanying drawing an inner side view of a window is shown with my invention applied to the sash.
A represents a window-frame, and B a sash fitted within it, as usual, to slide up and down. To one of the side strips a of the sash there is attached, by a screw or` pivot, b, a button, C, composed of two curved arms, c c', the outer surfaces or edges of which are portions of two circles, which areleccentric with the screw or pivot b, the arm d serving as a thumb-piece, by which the button is adjusted.
Vhen the upper arm c is adjusted in contact with the side or jamb of the window-frame the point of contact is above the screw or pivot I), as shown, and the sash cannot be raised; but whenthe lever-arm c is adjusted in con- Thus it will be seen that by this simple arrangement the sash will be locked in a closed state, so that it cannot be raised from the outer side of the window, and the sash also held at any desired point between an open and a closed state, the invention being applip cable to both the upper and lower sashes of a window.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The button C, pivoted to the sash, and having the two eccentric-arms c c and radial thumb-piece d, constructed and operating in such a manner that when the point of contact of the arm c with the jamb of the windowframe is below the pivot b the sash is held raised, and when the point of contact of the arm c is above said pivot the sash is held down, as herein shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 11th day of February, 1867.
PHILIP VERBECK.
