IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-SUIPPORTERS.
The Schedule referred-to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom ytm-oy concern `Be it known that l, Romance M. (liMrnELn, of Calubridgeport. in the of,Massachusetts have invented an improved lfVindow-Sash Supporter and Lock, of which the tollowing and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying dra-wings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of ay Window-frame 'with its sashes, to which my improvement is applied.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the sume.
Figure 3 is a'perspeetive view, representing my hnpro'vement applied to a sash, (enlarged.)
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, cheap, and reliable means of supporting window-sashes at any desired height, and looking them in place when closed; vand niy invention consists inV secured at one extremity to these-sh, and carryingat its opposite end a roll of rubber or other suitable inaterial, which is caused, by means of a screw, to bear with suilicient force against the side of the windowfranie to insure the sash'being retained at any desired point on removing the hand therefrom, the sash, when turning the screw, plate which carries the roll, to enter a notch in the side of the windowfra-ine.
To enable others skilled in thea-rt to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the' manner in which I have carried it out. v
In the said drawings, A represents the windowiame, and B B the sashes which slide tlrerein. C is a plate or spring, composed of steel or other' suitable metal, which is secured at its lowerend, by means of screws or otherwise, within a groove or recess, a, inthe sash B. The opposite end of '1511.6 Dlate C is bi1rcated, and carries a roll, VD, covered with rubber, or conlposed of any suitable material, which revolves on a pin, b.
E is a thumb-screw, which works in the sash, and bears against the inside of the plate C, by which means the roll D ma); be caused to press against the side of the windowframe with the force required'to produce a' suiieient amount of friction to retain thc sash at any desired height, on removing the hand therefrom, and
county of Middlesex, and State.
a spring or plate prevent it from descending by its own weight.- The friction, however, between the roll D andv theslde of applied to raise or lower the sash; and it will be seen that in theevent of the shrinkage or swelling of the frame or sash, the pressure of the roll D upon the frame 'may be varied bymcans of the screw E, so as to produce the exact amount of friction required to prevent the sash from descending by its own weight.
The sash is locked in place, vwhen closed, by turning the screw E, so as to force the plate C still further out from the sash, and cause a projection, o, to enter a. notch or recess in alne-tal plate, (l, attached to the side of thc frame, a large notch,c, being provided for the reception of the roll D when the plate C is forced out to lock the sash. Instead of a single projection, o, the plate C may be provided with two projections, one on each side of the roll D, which will enter suitable notcheslor recesses in the frame A. A sash-sup porter and lock are thus combined together, which may be easily operated, and possess the advantages ot' cheapness, simplicity, and durability. lhe plate C, instead of being made of spring-metal, may be composed oi' ordinary metal, and be. hinged or jointed at f,- the screw E, instead ot' merely bearing against il', represented, heilig .secured thereto, so that it will either withdraw or advance it, as may be required.
llyirnproved supporter and look may be applied to oth sashes of a. window-traine, as seen in the drawings, or to one only, asmay be found niost desirable. It-is only necessary, however, to apply it to one side of the sash.' v
. Claim.
What'I claim as my invention, and. vdesire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The with'n-described sash-supporter and lock, con` sisting of the plate C, with its friction-roll D, in combination with the` 'screw E, and a projection o, for looking the sash when closed, operating substantiallyv as described.
