Description

Inventor DLPETERS, PHOmu'mOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON. D C
we i tluited i tait/5 www. M
CORNELIUS II. cAIN Oli"4 FREMONT, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 86,359, dated Februar/ry 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' SASH-FASTENER.
The Schedule-referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I CORNELIUS H. GAIN, of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky, and State of Ohio7 have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spccication.
This invention relates to improvements in sash-fast` eners, whereby it is designed to provide an improved arrangement of selilfastening device, to be released for moving the sash in either direction, by pressing thereon in the direction it is desired to move the sash, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure l represents an elevation of a window having 'my improvement applied to it, and
Figures 2 and 3 represent detail views of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a oase, to be fastened to the stile of the sash, containing two bars, B, arranged to slide in the said case at oblique angles to the stile and the window-ii'ame, the one in an upward direction, and the other in a downward direction, the outer ends being provided with thumb-pieces, projecting through slots in the front plate ofthe case, to permit the application ofthe ingers for moving them.
The inner ends of the said bars carry rollers, D D, toothed on one portion of the perimeter, and plain or slightly roughened on the other.
The toothed portion gears with racks E, correspondingly toothed, and suitably supported in the case for the purpose.
The said rollers, or Wheels, are so arranged that the plain or roughened portions will bear against the face of the window-frame, when the slides are moved suliciently in that direction.
When the rollers are resting in the position represented in fig. 3, with their roughened surfaces bearing against the face of the window-frame, an effort to raise the window-sash, without also withdrawing the slide of the roller D, would cause the said roller to turn in the direction to draw it down tighter against the said frame, and wedge against it with such force as to prevent raising it; but if the slide of the said roller D be raised at the same time, the sash may then be freely raised. In like manner, when the sash is to be moved downward, the slide of the roller D must be also moved downward, and will otherwise lock the sash.
The roller D will naturally bear against the jamb of the window-frame by the action of gravity, but it may be necessary to move the roller D into contact with the jamb when that one is required to act.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, 4and desire to secure by Letters Patenti The slides B, carrying the toothed and plain or roughened rollers D D', combined with the case A, provided with toothed racks E, substantially as and for the purpose specied. v
