To all'fwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIM J. Dn GRUMMOND, of Cincinnattin the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, ,and exact description of the construction and operation ci' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, .in which- Figure l is a perspectiveview of a window-sash and frame containing the improvevents hereinafter specified.

Figure 2 is a vertical section through the line M N, iig. l, at right angles to the sash. o

Figure 3 is a similar section through the-line P P,

g. l. s 1 The object of my improvements is to permit a window-sash to be raised with facility, and to rest'secnrely at any desired point in the frame, avoiding the sticking resulting from too close a tit, and the rattlingiresrulti'ng from `too much play-between the sash and the aine.

Similar letters refer to like A is the movable sash.

B,is the windowframe.

C and 0 are pieces screwed or otherwise fastened to the different sides, respectively, of the window-frame, (g. 1,) to keep the sash in its place. o

D is a piece, of the saine length as the piece C, placed between thev sash and the said piece, and lying partially underneath it, the piece O being soshaped that the piece D will, when the springs F are tightly compressed, lie wholly underneath it.

D, ig.l3, is a piece, shorter than the movable sash, and fitted into and travelling with it.-

It is not intended that the pieces D and D shall be used in the same window, though they'may be, but that both sides may be arranged with pieces D and springs F, or with pieces D and springs F'.

Immediately opposite the pieces C there is'a strip of brass, or other metal, screwed or otherwise fastened to the window-frame, so that the back or Vvrear of the sash travels'in contact with it.

E, fig. 2, is a catch, with a bevelled top, made fast to the sash.

vSpiral springs, F F F, iig. 2, are made fast to the piece O, underneath the surface, which press the piece D against the sash, and thereby push the catch E into the notches K.

When the strips D are in use', spiral springs, F F', are made fast to the sash A, on the other edge or side of the window, iig. 3, which press the piece D against the sash, and by the reactionary pressure of thepsash against the piece D', keep vthe Window in its proper place.

It, and raising it in the usual way. The catch E, by reason cil its bevelled top, will pass easily from the notches K. When it is desired to lower the window, the knob E is pulled directly out, at right angles to the plane of the Window, when the pressure of Athe window, acting upon the pieces D or D', will compress the'springs F F or F F', and so make room between the sash and the frame for the catch E to be withdrawn from either of the notches K, when the window may be shut, or brought down to a new position.

Of course it will be seen that strips of India rubber may be substituted for the pieces D D and the springs F F', without changing the principle of the invention herein shown. p

I am aware of the use of strips upon springs, to hold sash in position, of similar character to mine, and do not claim broadly these elements or their combination simply;- but kWhat l do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-l l The series of springs marked F or F', and the pieces D or D', or the equivalent of said devices, in combination with the catch E and the series of cavities or notches K, as and for the purpose described.
