Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEo F. B. VAN VLEOK AND Gr. NICHOLS, OF PLAINFIELD, N. J., ASSIGNORS TO THEMSELVES AND G. D. MERRILL, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,642, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FREDERICK B. VAN VLEcK and GEORGE NICHOLS, of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvementin Supporters for Window Sashes and Blinds; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a view representing part of a sliding blind with our supporter attached, the parts being partially in section. Fig. 2 is a separate elevation of our said supporter; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same.
The saine parts are denoted by corresponding letters.
Supporters for railroadcar windows and blinds have heretofore usually been attached to 011e side, and a separate lifting-piece applied at the center of the window or blind, requiring the use of both hands in raising or lowering the same. I
The nature of our said invention consists in a sliding latch at the side of the window or blind, connected with the thumb-piece or lifter at or near the center of saidV sash or blind, whereby the supporter can be operated by one hand in the act of raising or lowering the said window or blind.
1n the drawings, a represents the sash, blind, or window; b, the casing in which the sanIe is tted to slide. c is a plate with the lifter d at or near the center of the said window or blind. e is the thumb-piece, passing through a mortise in c, and connected to one end of the bent lever j" upon the fulcruni i, and the other end of said lever j' is connected with the latch g by a short link. This latch g is made with a screw-stem, g', so that the length thereof Inay be adjusted to accommodate any slight variation in vthe distance loetween the plate c and casing I), and the end of the said latch g slides in a plate, h, screwed to the edge of the sash or blind.
k is a spring acting between the support l for said bolt g and a projection on said bolt, to keep the same projected except when withdrawn by pressing upon the thumb-piece e.
o o are notches in the casing to receive the end of the latch g.
It will be understood that the latch g passes through a hole bored in from the edge of the win dow or blind, and that the screw-stem allows the latch g to be entered from the said edge and screwed into the connection to the lever f.
If desired, the end of the lat-ch g may be made square, or nearly so, to enter a hole in the casin g and act as a bolt, and this bolt may also act as a latch in some ofthe notches o, if they are sufficiently deep and beveled in the direction shown in the drawings.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe thumb-piece e, passing through a mortise in the plate c, and connected to the bent lever f, in combination with the lifter d, bolt g, and spring 7c, the parts being arranged and acting as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our signatures this 27th day of February, A. 1).'1866.
FRED. B. VAN VLEOK. GEO. NICHOLS.
Witnesses:
GEo. D. WALKER, OHAS. H. SMITH.
