IMPROVED WEATHER-STRIP.

To dll whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, CHARLES BEAN, of the city and county of Ionia, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Weather-Strip; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View.

In this invention, a rubber strip is attached along the middle of the edge. of a door or Window, by means ofv a clamping-rod, which presses 011e edge of the rubber strip into a groove inthe door or window, prepared for the purpose. The clamping-rod is fastened in place by screws, and its outer edge is sunk below the surface of the edge of the door, leaving a recess, into which the projecting edge of the rubber folds back when the door is closed.

In the drawings- A represents a door;

B, the jamb; and

C, the threshold.

Along the centre of the edge of the door a groove, D, is cut, in which the inner edge of a rubber strip, E, is placed, the outer edge of said strip projecting out from the edge of therdoor, as seen in fig. 1.

rIhe rubber strip having been thus placed in the groove, it is securely caoniined in that position by a rod, F, which fits into the groove, being fastened down uponV the inner edge of the rubber by means of screws c c e.'

When fastened in this position, the outer surface of' the rod comes below the surface of the door, leaving a depression, G, along the latter, into which the rubber folds, as seen in fig. when the door lits closely to the jamb or threshold. f

The same device may be applied to window-sashes, to prevent the air, dust, 85e., from entering around them.

I make the rubber strip so wide that its inner edge', when in position, will rest under the centre of the rod, by which means it will be much more firmly held in place.

I am aware that strips of rubber have been heretofore applied to the edges of doors in a manner some- -what similar Vto this; but they have never been iastencd in position by a rod and screw, and a depression has never been left for them to fold back into when the door fitted closely. The consequence was that the strips were either insecurely fastened, or else that when once in position they could not be removed or readjusted; and when the edge of' the door fitted closely to lthe jamb or threshold, it cut the'rubber, and destroyed its usefulness in a very short time.

My invention obviates all these difficulties, enabling the rubber to be set out further when Worn, or to be taken out and replaced by another strip, and eiectually lpreserving it from being cut and damaged by the close itting of the door or Window.

I do not claim the rubber strip-When fastened along the centre of the edge of the door in any other manner; neither do I claim such a strip of rubber when fastened to the outside or inside of the door by any means whatever; but
