SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 729,406, dated May 26, 1903.
Application filed January 27, 1902. Serial No. 91,486. (No model.)
To all whom it may concor-71,:
Be it known that I, BENJAMEN PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Chicago,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIinges; and I do hereby declaro the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a hinge, the object being to provide a device of this character having a self-concont-ained gage by means of which its position on the parts to be hinged together can be readily determined without the use of other marking or measuring tools; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafterfully described and claimed.
In the accom panyingdrawings, illustrating my invention, Figure lis a view in elevation of a hinge constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig.'3ris a section of same on the line 3 3 ofFig. l. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the hinge secured in place.
In hinging two members together', such as a door and jamb, it is essential that the pivots of the hinges are parallel with the adjacent edges ofthe partshinged andin exact alinementwith each other, as otherwise said hinges are subjected to undue strain, and the result is that the increased friction will cause disagreeable squeaking. In determining the position of the hinge great difficulty is frequently occasioned in marking the door or jamb preparatory to cutting `the -recessfor the leaf, Aandas depth than the flange B, but extending in the.
same direction, said flanges being preferably sharp on their Outer ends, so that when the leaf is placed in position on the part to which itis to be secured the place can be marked accurately by tapping on said leaf with ahammer, whereby said flanges D will indent the wood. The flanges B will obviously enable the operator to so secure the leaves to the 4members to be hinged as to bring the pivots into the desired position relatively to the door or other member, not only squaring the leaves, but also acting as a stop to prevent either leaf from being secured too far inwardly.
I claim as my invention- In a hinge, the combination with the leaves of flanges mounted on the inner edges of said leaves and extending parallel to the length of the hinge, and flanges of a less depth than the other flanges formed on the top, bottom and sides of the leaves, and having their outer edges pointed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMEN PETERSON.,
