UNTTED STATE PATENT @FFTQE.
FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS BORING, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED DOOR AND SASH FASTENER.
Application filed August 14., 1912.
To all whom it may com-er Be it known that I, Fnav us JOSEII-IUS BORING, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Door and Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in door and sash fasteners and has for its object to provide a device of this character which may be readily adapted for use in either capacity.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device comprising a pair of pivoted arms, one of which is adapted to be engaged with a stationary member and the other adapted to be wedged in engagement with a movable member to secure the latter in locked position.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very etficient and useful in operation.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangementof parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section through a window showing my improved sash fastener applied to use thereon. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section theret-hrough as seen on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section through a door and jamb therefor showing the device applied to use thereon. Fig. 1 is a vertical section as seen on line 4rft, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device removed.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 and 2 indicate a pair of arms or plates formed preferably of metal, the same being pivoted to one another at one of their ends by means of a stud or pin 3 and in order to permit movement of the one plate or arm with respect to the other, the member 1 is provided with a longitudinal slot 4: through Specification of Letters Patent.

which the stud 3 extends. This slot extends from a point immediately adjacent the inner end of the arm 1, to a point slightly beyond the center of the latter and the ends of said slot are bent or curved toward one another, as shown at 5 and 6 respectively. The free end of the arm or elongated plate 1 is provided with a laterally extending shank or projection 7, vhich is tapered toward its free end to form a substantially wedge-like prong or the like, while the free end of the arm or plate 2 is also provided with a laterally extending shank or projection 8, disposed in a direction opposed to that in which the shank 7 is directed, and said latter shank is substantially circular in cross section and covered with a rubber sleeve 9.
In applying the device to use as a sash fastener, the laterallyvprojecting portion 7 of the arm 1, is disposed between the dividing strip 10 of the window casing 11 and the upper sash 12, whereupon the arm 2 is adjusted until the stud 3 enters the curved portion 5 of the slot a and said .arm 2 is then swung or turned on its pivot to wedge the projection 8 at the free end thereof against said upper sash. The rubber sleeve 9 on the projection 8 will prevent the pro jection removing the paint and the like from the sash and the wedging of the same thereagainst, will lock said sash in its adjusted position.
In using the device as a door lock, the sharp pointed prong or projection 7 is driven in a door j amb 13 so that the one end of the arm 1 will project beyond the face of the j amb and so that the body of the same will be disposed between said jamb and the free end of the door 14. Said door is then closed and the arm 2 adjusted on the arm 1, until the stud 3 is entered in the curved end 6 of the slot 4. The arm 2 is then swung on its pivot until the projection 8 on said arm 2 wedges against the front face of the door 14, which will, obviously lock said door in its closed position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 1. A combined door and sash fastener comprising an elongated plate provided with a lateral wedge-like projection at one end thereof, a stud mounted in the opposite end of the same an additional plate provided with a longitudinal slot through which said stud extends, the ends of said slot being curved toward one another, and a laterally extending bearing member formed on the one end of said additional plate.
2. A device of the class described comprising an elongated plate having a laterally ex tending wedge-like projection formed at one end thereof, a laterally extending stud mounted in the opposite end of the same, an additional plate provided with a longitudinal slot in one end thereof through which said stud extends, the ends of said slot being curved toward one another to receive said stud therein at predetermined times a laterally extending projection formed on the opposite end of said additional plate, and a. cushioned bearing member applied to said last mentioned project-ion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
