DOOR-STOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
Application filed March 24, 1914. Serial No. 826,989.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVIN D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lehighton, in the county of Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Stops, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a door stop, and more particularly to the class of temporary door locks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which can be conveniently carried for use in loclring' a door against swinging movement in addition to the ordinary lock of the door so as to obviate the possibility of the opening of the door should the ordinary lock be tampered with, thereby preventing the 111- trusion of an outside person in a room while occupied.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which can be readily adjusted and applied in a manner to fasten the door firmly when closed or slightly ajar.
A further object of the invention is the provi ion of a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, possessing few parts, thereby enabling any one to apply the same for the fastening of a door against swinging movement, and also whlch can be manufactured at a minimum expense.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing :F igure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through a device constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the threshold strip and a portion of the door in section with the de vice applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the wedging bits or members. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of a modified form of the device. 1
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a portion of a swinging door of the ordinary well-known construction, B the threshold strip which is nailed or otherwise fastenedto the flooring C in thexordinary' well-known manner. I 7 The door'lo'ck comprises a pair of wedging bits or members 5 and 6 respectively,
although the same may be made from any other rigid material, 6 has fixed therein in pair of spurs or pins and the bit or member any suitable manner a 8 which work through openings or holes 9 formed in the bit or member 5, and have pointed ends 10 which are adapted to be driven into the flooring C or threshold strip B, or both, as the circumstances may require. In this manner the device is properly anchored with relation to the door A for the locking thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described. At a point between the pins 8 and formed in the bit or member 6 is an opening 11 through which is loosely passed a screw member 12, the same being adjustably engaged in a threaded opening 13 formed in the bit or member 5, while at one end of this screw member 12 is a winged head lei, and at its opposite end is a point 15, the latter being adapted to bite into the flooring C on the head 14, and during the manipulation or adjustment of the screw member 12 the bits or members 5 and 6 are separated from each other to wedge thebeveled ends 7 thereof between the threshold strip and the door, thus locking the latter against swinging movement. The pins 8 are of different lengths with respect to each other so that the wedging bits or members 5 and 6 can be anchored when the pins are inserted in the threshold strip B and flooring C, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
In Fig. 4: there is shown a modified form of the invention, wherein the pins 16 carried by the wedging bit or member 17 are of the same length with respect to each other. Otherwise the modified form of device is identical with the construction hereinbefore set forth.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use'of the deturning of the.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the of the bits and forming guides for the other hit, an adjusting element laterally passed through one of the bits and threaded in the other bit for moving the said bits relative to each other, and Wedge-shaped ends on the bits.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature 20 in presence of two Witnesses.
