WITNESSES www Patented Oct. 5, 1886.
./iTTORNEI/'S UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK C. KIRCHNER AND WILLIAM HENRY WAsIIRURN, 0E NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,437', dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed-August 19, ISEG. Serial No. 211,302. (No model.)
To all whom it 11ml/ concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK C. KIRCH- NER and WILLIAM HENRY WAsHEURN, both citizens of the United States, residing at ing is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in doorfasteners; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, fully pointedl out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows our device applied: to a door.I Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are details.
Similar lettersindicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a door which closes infthe usual way against thejamb B.
C is the lock secured tothe door, the bolta of which passes behind the catch D on the jamb when the door is locked.
Eis the main plate or frame of our fast-V ener, which is placed between the door and the jamb in such a way that when the former is locked the 'bolt a will pass through an Opening, b, inthe inner end of the plate E. In the outer end of this plate is a slot, c, the sides of which formguides for the sliding clamp F, which is acted on by a thumb-screw, G, tapped into the head-piece d. The clamp is provided on its sides with grooves e,which engage the sides of the slot c, and serve to hold it from slipping out of the same.
The operation of our deviceis as follows: The plate E is inserted between the door and the jamb in such a way that when the door is locked the bolt a will pass through the opening b. The clamp F is then moved down the slot c by the screw G until one of the legs f on the same will rest on the lock C, and the other on the catch D, when by the continued action of the screw the inner edge of the opening b will be forced againstthe bolt a, and draw the latter against the inner face of the catch D with sufficient force to prevent it from being shoved back, or from being unlocked by means of a key until relieved from the action of our fastener.
When the door to which our device isto be applied has its lock on the outside, the clamp F is used,as shown in Fig. 1-that is, the legs f press against the lock and the catch, so as to rest rrnly against the body of each; but when the door is provided with a mortisel/ogfthe clam p is reversed, so thatitsrsnxiooth side rests against both the doorsurface and thej'amb,a1'id will not deface or indent them.
To diminish the area of the opening b, a f
slide, g, is secqredtg the plate E by a screw, h, which passes through a sl`ot`,`,"'in"this slide, and through the plate E, and istightened 'by annutj. I
To facilitate the insertion and withdrawal of the clamp F from the slot c, a recess, 7c, is cut into one of the sides of lthe latter, so that when the thumb-screw is turned back the clamp can be taken out, either for the purpose of reversing or for packing the parts together morecompactly for purposes of transportation.
By the device above described a door-fastener is provided by means of which any door having` either a surface or a'mortise 'lock can be securely fastened without injury either to the door or to the lock.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg 1. In a door-fastener, the combination, with the plate E, having an opening, I), for the passage of the lock-bolt, of the clamp F,mov ably attached to said plate, and means, substantially as described, for actuating lsaid clamp, substantially as set forth.
I 2. The combination, with the plate E,.hav ing an opening, b, for the passage of thelockbolt, and a slot, c, of the clamp F, constructed to slide in said slot, and the screw G, adapted to act on said clamp, substantially as de-v scribed.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK C. KIRCHNER. [L S.] WILLIAM II, WASHBURN. [L 8.]
