Description

INVENTOR WITNESS rA-s-mmazv KATHLEEN TREAT GOODSELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. a, 19th.
Application filed January 6, 1917. Serial No. 140,993.
Y '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known tiiat I, KATHLEEN TREAT GoonsnLL, a citizen of the United States, re siding at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in door locks.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a latching attachment for the sliding bolt of an ordinary door lock whereby the bolt may be positively held against movement in an unlocking direction, so that the same cannot be surreptitiously influenced by unauthorized persons.
It is also my purpose to provide the sliding bolt of an ordinary lock with an aperture which is adapted to aline, when in its projected position, with a similar aperture in the keeper casing for the said bolt and to pass through said alining apertures a looking element in the nature of a key, so as to positively hold the bolt in looking position, but at the same time upon the withdrawal of the key permit of the movement of the bolt in an unlocking position.
It is a still further object of the invention to produce a protective device for the sliding bolts of locks comprising a key member adapted when inserted in the keeper casing and through a suitable orifice in the bolt to so engage with the casing as to prevent its Withdrawal therefrom.
It is a still further object of the invention to produce a device of this character which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness and thorough eiiiciency as well as ease of application and operation.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a detail elevation illustrating the application of the improvement,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the key member.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary hinged door provided with a lock 2 that has its bolt 3 received when projected in a suitable keeper casing i that is secured to the trim or jamb 5 for the door 1.
The bolt 3 has its end which is projected through the lock casing provided with a transverse opening 6 and through this opening is adapted to be passed the shank or body of a key 7, the said key being secured to the keeper casing 4: through the medium of a flexible element such as a chain 8. The keeper casing l upon its inner face is centrally provided with an outwardly extend ing boss 9 that has an opening or passage 10 disposed to aline with the opening 11 in its outer face and through which the key 7 is adapted to pass. The passage 18 communicates with a transverse slot 12 provided in the boss 9, so that the opening in the boss is substantially L-shaped. The key is prefer ably constructed from a round bar and is cut angularly from one of its ends to adjacent its other end and as indicated by the numeral l3 and is then cut transversely toward the angular wall 13 at the reduced end there of providing a bit 1%. This bit is adapted, when the key is turned, to enter the angular passage 12 in the boss 9 so as to hold the key within the keeper casing against danger of accidental removal.
Preferably the inner wall of the keeper casing is provided with reamed openings for the reception. of securing screws 15 and to permit of the ready insertion of these screws the outer wall of the casing is provided with rounded openings 16 which are arranged opposite the referred to reamed openings and these openings 16 permit of the insertion of the screws as well as the screw driver whereby to permit of the screws being forced in the jamb or casing.
While the device has been illustrated in the form of a rim lock and rim casing it will be apparent that with slight alterations the same can be in the nature of mortise locks and keeper casings.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a bolt having a transverse opening therethrough, and a keeper to receive the bolt, said keeper having its opposite faces provided with openings designed to register with. the openings in the bolt when the bolt is received in the keeper, said keeper upon one of its faces having a boss surrounding the opening in the said keeper, said boss having an ll.- shaped passage, one of the branches of which registering with the referred to opening. and a key member sustained. upon the keeper lUZ:
and designed to enter the registering openings, and said key being further provided with a bit adapted to enter the offset passage in the L-shaped channel of the boss.
2. The combination with a slotted bolt and a keeper to receive the bolt, of a key member suspended from the keeper and designed to pass through the keeper and through the slot in the bolt whereby to lock the bolt in the keeper, and said key having one of its ends formed With a bit designed to be arranged adjacent to'oneof the sides of the keeper when the key is turned in the keeper and whereby to retain the key in the said keeper.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
KATHLEEN TREAT GOODSELL.
