GLEN E. JOHNSON, OF SPOKANE, WASHING-TEN.
SAFETY APPLIANCE FOR IDGOR LGCKS Application filed August 19 1921. Serial No. 493,519.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLEN E. Jorrnson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and Stateot lVashington, have invented certa n new and useful Improvements in a Safety Appliance for Door Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a comparatively simple and eiiicient means for securing doors or door locks against surreptit-ious opening or operation as for example for the protection of the occupant of a hotel or apartment room when it is desired to protect against intrusion from the outside, and tor the protection of unoccupied buildings which must be left otherwise unprotected and which must be secured from the outside; and in this connection to provide a safety device which will operate effectively even in theevent that the ordinary door locking means should be outo'f order; and with these objects in view the in vention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the'drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a safety device embodyingthe invention applied in the operative position. to a door.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the same taken perpendicular to the plane of the door. b
Figure 3 is a rear view of the device detached and showing the members of the retainers in the open or spread position.
Figure 4 is a'detail view of one of the retainer or knob engaging members detached.
Figure 5 is a similar view of the adjustable key blank or pin carrier detached.
The device consists essentially of a retainer 10 consisting of relatively movable members 10 and 11 which are adapted to form a casing or housing for a door knob 11, said retainer members being provided with base plate members 12, integral with which they may be formed, said base plate members being pivotally connected at 13 to permit of the opening of the retainer as shown in Figure 3 to fit the same over a knob. The base plate members are also provided with means whereby they may be secured in the normal position to hold the knob enclosing portion thereof closed and hence in housing relation with the knob, and in the construction illustrated said holding means is provided by forming the free ends of the base plate members with upturned ears 13 having registrable openings 1 for engagement by the shackle of a padlock 15 01": any suitable kev actuated or combination controlled type. 0
Connected with the retainer and more preferably with the lase member of the same through the medium of a carrier 16 is a key blank or pin 17 which may if preferred consist of a key which is adapted to be inserted into the keyhole oi'v the door lock and extended through the door so as'to bar or block any attempt to insert a key from the other side thereof, said carrier 01 vionsly preventing the insertion 01" the key from the side occupied by the retainer. In the construction illustrated the carrier consists of a slotted plate 19 operating in a slot 20, so that the carrier may be adjusted longitiulinally of the base or bearing members of the retainers to locate the key blank or pin in registration with the key hole of the door lock even though the distance between the same and the knob may slightly vary from the standard distance. r l
The key blank or pin in the construction illustrated is provided with a transverse pivot 22 mounted in coiled keepers 23 at the free end of the carrier, but it will be understood that this construction may be varied and that the key of the lock in con nection with which the device is to be used may be substituted for the key blank or pin. A key blank is preferably used however rather than a straight pin, for the reason that it may be inserted through the key hole until the ward is beyond the other side of the door and then given a quarter turn so as to have the ward bear against the inner surface of the door to act as an additional means of insuring the security of the device in its application to the door knob. An advantage of the device in addition to that of preventing access to the key hole of the lock and hence the unlocking of the door from either side until the device has been removed, consists in the fact that if applied to a door for example of an untenanted house in which the bolt mechanism has become injured or is out of order, the retainer will prevent the turning of the knob of the door from the outside and hence prevent the opening of the door even though it may not. be locked. The retainer cannot be turned by reason of the engagement of the key blank 1 pin with the key hole, and the knob being entirely concealed and housed Within the casing or housing of the retainer is inaccessible.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is:
l. A. safety appliance for door'locks having a knob embracing and engaging retainer and a key blank or pin connectedtherewith for extension through the key hole of the loc r, the retainer having pivotally connected members adapted to enclose and house the door knob.
2. A safety appliance for door locks having a knob embracing and engaging retainer and a key blank or pin connected therewith for extension through the key hole of the lock, the retainer having knob concealing members provided with pivotally connected base plates and means for securing the members in their closed and knob embracing relation.
3. A safety appliance for door locks having a knob embracing and engaging retainer and a key blank or pin connected therewith for extension through the key hole of the lock, the retainer having knob concealing members provided with pivotally connected base plates and means for securing the members in their closed and knob embracing relation, and consisting of upturned extremities of the free ends of said base plate provided with registrable openings for engagement by the shackle of a pad lock.
4:. A safety appliance for door locks hav ing a knob embracing and engaging retainer and a key blank or pin connected therewith for extension through the key hole of the lock, the key blank or pin being connected with the retainer.
5. A. safety appliance for door locks having a knob embracing and engaging retainer and a key blank or pin connected therewith for extension through the key hole of the lock, said key blank or pin having an adjustable connection with the retainer.
6. A safety appliance for door locks having a knob embracing and engaging retainer and a key blank or pin connected therewith for extension through the key hole of the lock, a connection between the key blank or pin and the retainer consisting of a carr rier having a slot and pin connection with the retainer for adjustment radially with relation to the knob.
7. A. safety appliance for looks having a retainer to house an operating element of the lock, the appliance having means to enter a keyhole of the lock to prevent insertion ot a key, said retainer being loose on and movable independently of the element aside from said means, whereby movement of the appliance in the event of fracture of said means will be independent of the lock and element to prevent operation of the element.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
