(Applisra tion filed Feb. 26, 1900.,,
(No Model.)
[/VVE/VTOR W/Y/VESSES: I
Afforhey Nrrn PRISOILLA STEPHENS, OF EXPRESS, OREGON.
KEYHOLE- GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,649, dated June 26, 1900. Application filed February 26,1900. Serial No. 6,574. (No model.)
To all whom it may cancer/2,:
Be it known that I, PRISCILLA STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at EX- press, in the county of Baker and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyhole-Guards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in keyhole-guards, and especially to the provision of a sliding plate which is adapted to slide between the face of the door and the lock having a keyhole which it is desired to close, means being provided for holding the plate in a position to close the hole as well as to hold the plate from over the keyhole when it is desired to allow a key to be inserted into the lock.
More specifically the presentinvention consists in providing a longitudinally-grooved plate adapted to be seated in a recessed portion of the door and slide therein, while a stationary plate having a slot therein is fas tened to the door, the slotted portion being provided to receive a lug on the sliding plate, which lug carries a bail adapted to engage over an angled edge of the stationary plate to normally hold the plate from over the keyhole in the lock. Said bail is designed to engage against the opposite side of the angled portion of the plate when it is desired to hold the plate over the keyhole.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined'in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a plan View showing my keyhole-guard as applied to a door and lock. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view through the guard-plates. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing the sliding plate locked in. a position to close over the keyhole,
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A. designates the face of a door, to which a lock B is secured The face of the door adjacent to the edge of the lock and extending underneath said look is recessed, as at C, and D is a sliding plate having a longitudinal groove D therein, which plate is designed to slide in said recess.
Secured to the plate D is a lug E, having a contracted portion E, which latteris adapted to slide in the slot F in the plate E, which latter is secured to the door in any suitable manner. One edge of plate F has its edge bent at a right angle, as seen at G. The head of saidlug E has pivoted thereto a bail K, which when the plate D, carrying said lug, is slid to its farthest outward limit to the left is designed to engage over said angled portion of the plate F and hold the sliding plate D so that a key may be inserted in the keyhole-of the look. When the plate D is slid in to its farthest limit to the right, the end of said plate D will cover over the keyhole, and the swinging end of the bail may rest against the oppositeside of the angled edge of the plate F and hold the sliding plate so that it will remain over the keyhole.
The object of having the sliding plate grooved is so as not to interfere with a key which is placed in the look from the inside, thus making it possible to slide the plate over the inner face of the look when the key re mains in the lock.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A keyhole-guard comprising in combina tion a stationary grooved angle-plate seated in a recess in the face of a door, a sliding grooved plate resting on said stationary plate, a lug on the sliding plate, a bail carried by said lug, a slitted plate fastened over said stationary and sliding plates, and having an outwardly-bent end against which the end of the bail is adapted to be held to lock the slide-plate over the keyhole of a door-lock, as set forth.
In -testimony whereof I afiix'my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PRISOILLA STEPHENS.
