SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,927, dated January 14, 1902.
Application filed February 12, 1900. Serial No. 4,871. (No modela To all whom it may concern/.-
Beit known that I, JOHN E. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of knives commonly known as jaok-knives; and the object of my invention is to provide such an article with means whereby the blade may be positively locked in an open or closed position and also one in which the means accomplishing this result is not easily discovered. One form of device by the use of which these objects may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a closed knife enibodying myinvention with parts broken away to show construction andwith the lockingbolt in its forward position. Fig. 2 is a like view, but with the locking-bolt in its rearward position. Fig. 3 is a view in section looking from the front and with the lockingbolt pushed back. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the blade in side view. Fig. 5 is a side view of the knife with the locking-bolt pushed back and blade open, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the stationary side part of the handle looking from the inside and showing in dotted outline the position of the blade closed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes the stationary side part, including a plate a. and a grip 0, secured thereto in the usual manner. A semicircular slot a is formed in the plate ct at one end. A back piece 5 is secured to the plate a and has a portion 11, forming an end wall of the case in which the blade is located. An eye I) is formed on this back piece and is adapted to receive the end of a sliding latch that locks the parts in position. A pivoted side part c is carried by the side part a, and this pivoted side part includes a plate 0 and a grip 0 secured together, as by means of rivets or screws, preferably the latter. A semicircular slot 0 is formed in one end of this plate c and is located opposite and registers with the slot a when the blade is in the closed or open position.
Each of the side parts is provided at the ends with ears, as is common to devices of this kind, with the exception that the ear (1 .is secured to a sliding latch d, located in a recess in the pivoted side part c. This latch extends along the side part, and its end is adapted to engage the eye 6 for the purpose described. A recess 61 is formed in the ear d for the reception of the head of the pivot e, the end of the latch forming one wall of the recess, and a slot through this wall through which the pivot extends forming lips d underlying the head of the pivot to unite the parts at this end of the knife. This construction also allows the pivoted side part a slight lateral movement in addition to its pivoted movement and for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
A bladef is mounted on the pivot and has a lug f engaging the slot 66 and a lug f engaging the slot 0 in the plates a. and a, respectively. The slots 0 and a are formed on a semicircle, of which'the axis of the pivot for the blade is the center.
The operation in opening the blade is as follows: The lugs f and f are located, respectively, at opposite ends of the semicircular slots in the plates a and c, therebylocking the blade against pivotal movement. The ear d being moved outward, the latch dis disengaged from the eye 19 This end of the pivoted side part may now be raised sufficiently to clear the eye in its swinging movement. The pivoted side part is swung in the direction which the blade will have in opening, this movement changing the position of the lug f to the opposite end of the slot a if the blade is held stationary until the pivoted side part has reached a position in extension of the stationary part. The engagement of this lugf with the opposite end of the slot a will now swing the blade open as the swinging movement of the pivoted side part in the same direction is continued until the pivoted side part has reached its normal position. The ear d is now pushed inward, causing the latch to engage the eye 6 when the two lugs on the blade are located at opposite ends of the slots in the side parts as before, thus looking the blade in an open position. This position of the lugs with respect to the slots is shown in dotted outline in Figs. 1, 2, and 5 of the drawings. To close the knife, the latch is disengaged from the eye and the pivoted side part swung in the reverse direct-ion from that in opening.
It will be seen from this description that there Will be considerable mystery regarding the operation of opening the knife, for the reason that the ears are apparently the same as those in any common form of jack-knife. If it be discovered that the ear (1 may be moved, there has nothing apparently been accomplished in this movement, as the blade is as securely looked as before the movement, and it must be further discovered that the pivoted sidepart has a swinging movement before the blade can be opened.
While I have illustrated and described herein one means by which myinvention may be carried into effect, I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction shown, as it is obvious that changes may be made within the range of mechanical skill without departing from the invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a knife, in combination, a stationary side part having an eye, a pivot secured to -said part and having a head on its projecting end, a blade mounted on said pivot, a pivoted side part mounted on said pivot, a sliding ear having a lipped recess for the reception of the head on the pivot, and a sliding latch secured to the ear and arranged to engage the eye in the stationary side part.
2. In a knife, in combination, a stationary side part having an eye, a pivot secured to said part, a blade mounted on said pivot, a pivoted side part having a grip with a recess on its inner surface, screws passing through said recess and securing the grip to the side part, and a sliding latch having guide-slots engaged by the said screws and arranged to engage the eye on the stationary side part, and means for sliding the latch.
3. In a knife, in combination, a stationary side part having an eye, a pivot secured to said part and having a head on its projecting end, a pivoted side part having a grip with a recess in its under surface, screws passing through said recess and securing the grip to the side part, a sliding latch having guideslots engaged by said screws and arranged to engage the eye in the stationary side part, and an ear secured to the latch and havinga lipped recess for the reception of the head on the pivot.
