DOOR FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 26, 1909.
' HTTUHNEYS skins ArsN sie.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 26, 1909.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Serial No? 486,040.
To all who/m tt may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON J. SAPHIER, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to door fasteners and has for its object to provide an improved device applicable especially to the doors of dumb-waiters and constructed to hold the door securely closed, without danger of rattling.
Other features of my invention will appear from the description and claims following hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a specific embodiment of my invention, and in which- Figure l is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. l; Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are vertical section on lines 3-3, 4 4- and 5 5 respectively of Fig. l.
A represents the frame to which the dumbwaiter door B is hinged at B; C is a springlatch or other fastening device of any approved character. To one of the jambs of the frame A I secure a swivel or universal joint which in the special case shown comprises a plate D secured to the jamb, and a swivel member provided with a pivot pin E extending through the plate D at a right angle to the jamb, and further provided with two lugs F perforated to receive the pivot pin or trunnions G of the locking bar H. This pivot pin extends and swings (when the swivel member turns on the pin E) in a plane parallel to the jamb and perpendicular to the pin E.
On the door B is secured a bracket J having an upwardly directed member J so as to form a substantially U-shaped structure. The locking bar H when swung down into operative position as shown by full lines in Fig. l, lies in this bracket and is pressed therein forwardly by a spring K located at the rear portion of the keeper. On the jamb opposite to that carrying the swivel of the locking bar, is secured a keeper L adapted to receive the locking bar H, and preferably this keeper is provided with a rearwardly projecting hook L under which the bar lies in the locked position, see Fig. 3, under the influence of the spring K pressing said bar forwardly as stated above. The bar therefore cannot swing upwardly on the pivot E unless it is first swung rearward (on the pivot Gr) until it clears the hook L. When not in use, the bar may be swung out of the way, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. H is a knob for the easier manipulation of the locking bar.
It will be seen that the door B is securely locked by my invention, against swinging inward or outward on its hinges B. The spring K not only keeps the bar H under the hook L, but also presses the door rearward and prevents rattling, furthermore, the spring allows the parts to adjust themselves (within certain limits) as to their distance from each other, and thus alterations due to shrinkage or swelling of the wood will not affect the satisfactory operation of the device, nor will it be necessary to manufacture the metal and wood part-s with any special care, since the spring action will compensate for differences in size, within Certain limits.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the nature of my invention as set forth in the claims.
The invention may of course be applied to windows, shutters or other hinged or movable members as well as to doors.
I claim as my invention:
l. The combination with a movable member, of a bracket carried thereby, a locking bar arranged to engage said bracket, a spring for pressing the locking bar toward the portion of the bracket farthest away from the movable member, and a stationary keeper for receiving the locking bar at the time it engages the bracket.
2. The combination with a stationary frame, of a member movably connected therewith, a bracket carried by said member, a locking bar universally pivoted to the frame at one side and arranged to engage said bracket, a spring for pressing the locking bar away from the said member when in the bracket, and means, located on the frame, for holding the free end of the locking bar at the time said bar engages the bracket.
3. The combination with a stationary frame, of a member movably connected therewith, a bracket carried by said member, a locking bar universally pivoted to the frame at one side, and arranged to engage said bracket, a spring for pressing the locking bar away from the said member when in the bracket, and a keeper secured to the frame at the other side to receive the free end`ot` the locking bar and provided with a hook projected toward the movable member and adapted to prevent accidental displacement of the locking` bar.
Il. The combination with a movable member, of a bracket carried thereby, a locking` bar arranged to engage said bracket, a spring for pressing the locking bar toward the portion of the bracket farthest away from the movable member, and a stationary keeper for receiving` the locking` bar at the time it engages the bracket, said keeper being provided With a hook projected toward 15 the movable member, so that the spring will hold the locking bar under said hook and prevent accidental displacement of the bar.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of tivo subscribing; 20 witnesses.
SOLOMON J. SAPHIER.
Witnesses JOHN Lo'rKA, JOHN A. KEHLENBECK.
