DooR-FASTENR'.
Specificaton of Letters Patent.
vPatented Oct. 19, 1909.
'Application filed. May 20, 1909. Serial No. 497,314.
To all 'whom tt 'may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamlet, in the county of Starke and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in door fasteners.
The object of the invention is to provide a fastening device of this character adapted to be quickly and easily applied to a door to securely fasten the same in closed position and which may be readily disengaged from the door.
A further object is to provide a fastener having means whereby the same may be adjusted to fit doors having more or less space between their outer edges and the adjacent edges of the door frame.
A still further object is to provide a door fastener which may be readily folded and carried in the pocket when not in use.
IVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of one side of the fastener; Fig. 2, is a similar view of the opposite side; Fig. 3, is an edge view; Fig. 4, is a horizontal sectional view of a portion of a door and the adjacent portion of the door frame or jamb, showing the manner of using the fastener; Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the jamb engaging plate; and, Fig. 6, is a similar view of onelof the adjusting or filling plates.
My improved door fastener comprises a stop plate 1, having on one end an enlarged frame engaging head 2, and provided in its opposite end with a longitudinal slot 3. In connection with the stop plate 1, I provide a frame or jamb engaging plate 4, having on one end a series of laterally projecting teeth 5, which are adapted to be forced into the edge of the door jamb opposite to the edge of the door. In the inner end of the plate 4, is formed a pivot hole 6.
Arranged in the slot 3, of the plate 1, and
the hole 6, of the plate 4, is a pivot bolt or rivet 7, on which is pivotally or slidably mounted a door clamping or fastening plate 8, said plate being provided with a bolt engaging slot 9. On the inner end of the plate 8, is formed an enlarged door engaging head 10, having a seginental or curved outer edge, which is preferably serrated as shown at 11. Between the jamb engaging plate 4, and the door clamping or fastening plate 8, are arranged filling plates 12 and 13, said plates having in their inner ends pivot holes 14, through which the pivot bolt or rivet 7 passes, thereby pivotally securing said plates 12 and 13 between the adjacent plates of the fastener. The plate 12, has on its outer end a spacing flange 12', which is adapted to engage the plates 4 or 13, when swung to an operative position.
The pivot bolt or rivet Z, is provided adjacent to its head with a fiattened enlargement 15, which is engaged by the edges of the slot 3, in the plate 1, thereby preventing the rotation of said plate on the bolt. The end of the bolt which projects through the slot 9, of the plate 8, may be headed as shown, or provided with suitable plate retaining nut.
In the operation of the device, the door clamping or fastening plate 8, is swung around on the pivot bolt 7, with its head end projecting away from the door and the jamb engaging plate 4, is then inserted in the crack of the door between the outer edge of the same and the adj acent edge of the door frame with the head 2, of the stop plate 1, in engagement with the outer side of the frame, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4, of the drawings. After the parts have been thus engaged with the door frame, the door is closed so that the edge of the latter engages the outer side of the plate 4, and forces the teeth 5, thereof into the edge of the jamb, after which the door clamping or fastening plate is swung around and the serrated edge of the head 10, thereof is forced into engagement with the outer side of the door thereby securely holding the same in closed position. Should the crack between the edge of the door and the adj acent edge of the j amb be of such width that the edge of the door will not engage the plate 4, the filling plate 12, is swung around into engagement with the jamb engaging plate 5, and if this additional plate is not suficient to fill the space between the edge of the door and the plate 4:, the intermediate filling plate 13, is swung around between the plates 4 and 12, thus taking up further space, so that when the door is closed the pressure thereof Will force the teeth 5, of the plate 4:, into the edge of the door jamb, after which the door claniping plate is swung around into operative engagement with the door as herein before described. VVhen the fillng` plate 12, is used, the fiange 12' thereon, engages either the plate 4 or the plate 13, and causes the body of the plate 12 to bend from the pivotal bolt so that When the door enga-ging plate 8 is turned to operative position, the plate 12, exerts pressure on the head and fr-ietionally holds it in place.
From the foregoing description taken in connection With the acoompanyino' drawings, the Vconstruction and operation of the invention Will be lreadily understood 'Without requiring a more extended explanation. i Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the apnended cllaim.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
In a door fastener, a stop plate,,a pivot bolt arranged on said plate, a jamb engaging` plate pivotally lnounted on said bolt, said plate having` jamb engaging teeth, a door clamping or fastening plate having a pivotally slidable engagement With said bolt, a serrated door engaging head on said clamping plate, a series of filling` plates pivotally inounted on said bolt between said clamping plate and jamb engaging plate, one of said filling` plates having formed thereon a spacing' fiange adapted to bend the body thercof into frctional engagement with the door clamping plate, Whereby the la'tter is held in position, said fiange also forming a wedge adapted to be engaged by the dooi` to force the jainb engaging teeth into the jalnb.
In testnnony Whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- DGSSGS.
