POGKET DOOR PASTENING. No. 258,007. Patented May 16, 18:82.
xUNTTED STATES PATENT Ottieni..
ARTHUR BELDING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
POCKET DOOR-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,007, dated May '16, 1882.
Application filed January 21, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BELDING, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinPocket Door-Fastenin gs 5 and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. A
This invention relates to portable or pocket door-fasteniugs, by which the occupant of a room may secure the door of such room inde pendenti y of the fixed fastenings provided thereon.
The invention consists in a longitudinally grooved and slotted button provided with a hooked tongue sliding in the groove and adapted to engage the jamb, the part of said button intervening between its bearingface and said slot being of wedged shape, and being otherwise constructed as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Figure 1 shows the improved button applied to the door and jamb, here seen in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastening detached and enlarged. Fig. 3 shows a form of the fastening more suitable for application to doors whose frames are provided with moldings near the inner edge. y.
A is a button, made of metal, and generally ofabout the. dimensions shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
B is a deep longitudinal groove in the bean' in g-face A' of the button; and U is a longitudinal and laterally-extended slot intersecting the groove B, and arranged at an incline with the bearing-face A.
`D is a tongue freely working in the groove B, and retained therein by means of the pin d, also freely movable in the slot C. Said tongue is provided with the hook or hooks d' at its free end, intended to enter the j amb J as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The button is applied to fasten the door by holding the body of the button in line with the tongue, or turned back over the jamb, while the tongue is held against the jamb. The door is then closed, and in so doing the hooks d are forced into the jamb. The button is then turned over against the door and moved latertween the slot C and the bearing-face A,itcan be moved no farther. In this position the button binds equally and rmly upon both the door and jamb and prevents all movement of the former.
To allow the parts to be closely folded when not in use, the button is provided with the lateral extension a? at one end, and the grooves (l and B are also extended at said end, to permit the tongue to fold down upon the back of the button, as seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, in which figures the tongue is shown to be of equal width with the button, except near its inner end, where it is narrow to permit :its being drawn into the slot B, as indicated in dotted lines of Fig. 2. A recess, c', receives the hook or hooks d', so that no projection is presented when the parts are thus folded. A
In Fig. 3 the button is shown as having its bearing-face curved at both ends, thus making the part a of crescent form. 'By :means of this double taper or crescent form of the part a the button may be applied and secured by sliding it from either end toward the middle.
In the same figure is also shown a plate, E
provided with pins, c c, fitted to corresponding holes in the back ot' the button andalso to holes in the tongue, is applied to the latter in the position shown by dotted lines when the space between the door and jamb is so great as to require it, and is placed as shown in full line-s when the fastening is not in use.
I claim as my inventionl. In a portable or pocket door-fastening consisting of the grooved and slotted button A and hooked tongue D, provided with pin d, the slot G, inclined with reference to the bearing-face A', and laterally extended at one or both ends, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
y 2. In combination with the hooked tongue D, the button A, having the groove B andthe slot. C, laterally extended at one end, -and the 9 5 recess a', whereby the tongue may be-folded against the back, with the hooks guarded, sub= stantially as shown and described.
' 3. In the fastening described, the eombina- In testimony that Lelainl the foregoing as tion, with the tongue D, having holes d2, ofthe my invention I afx my signature in presence plate-E, provided with pins e e, Itted to the ot' two witnesses.
