GAG-E.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 311', 191.
Application filed October 25, 1917. Serial No. 198,462.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUNVALD HOLT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Galeton, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an. improvement in gages, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified, adapted for use in hanging doors, for indicating the amount and extent of the wood to be removed for the reception of the hinge.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the device in use;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the device in use, with a thin door in the casement;
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the hinge receiving cut complete.
In the present embodiment of the invention, a substantially rectangular frame is provided, consisting of side members 1 and 2, and end members 3 which connect the side members at their ends. The side memher 2, together with a portion of the end members 3 adjacent thereto, is bent laterally at a right angle to the plane of the frame, and the side member 3 has a laterally extending rib 4 extending in the same direction as the laterally bent side member 2 of the frame. This rib 4 has a beveled edge, so that it may be made to enter the material of the door, indicated at 5.
In use, the device is arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with the side member 2 engaging the face of the door, and with the rib 4 engaging the edge of the door, and by pressing the side member 1, the rib 4;
may be made to score a line on the edge of the door. In practice, the dimensions of the frame are such that the distance between the side members 3 is three and a half inches from inner edge to inner edge, while the distance from outer edge to outer edge is four inches. Thus measurements may be made for a three and a half or a four inch hinge. For the three and a half inch hinge the measurements are made inside the frame and for a four inch hinge outside the frame, it being understood. that the score line of the rib 4- applies to both size hinges. It will be observed that the improved gage not only lays out the linear measurements of the section of wood to be removed, but also lays out the depth of the said section, leaving a cut away place or recess 6 of a size to receive the hinge leaf.
In thin doors, where the cut away portion extends the full thickness of the door, the device may be arranged as shown in Fig. 3, with the side 2 engaging one face of the door 7 and the rib 4c engaging the other face. It is obvious that the device may be used with equal facility on the casement, for laying out the cut for the hinge.
I claim:
A gage of the character specified, comprising a substantially rectangular frame consisting of side members and connecting end members integral therewith, one of the side members and portions of the end members adjacent thereto of a predetermined length being bent laterally to extend at approximately right angles with respect to the plane of the frame, the other side member having a laterally extending rib extending in the same direction as the bent side member of the frame and forming a marking edge for the purpose specified.
