COMBINED RULE, LEVEL, TRY-SQUARE, AND CALIPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2?, 1917..
Application filed. January 14, 1916. Serial No. 72,120.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W.'MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at lValdo, in the county of Columbia, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Rules, Levels, Try-Squares, and Calipers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined rule, level, try-square and caliper.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an instrument of this character which will efficiently perform the oliices of a rule, level, try-square and caliper, and which will be simple in construction and capable of being manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawin gs wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention;
Fig. 2, an edge View thereof;
Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 41, a section on the line 1-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the manner in which the device is used as a caliper, and
Fig. 6, a view on a reduced scale of the blank from which the body section of the device is formed.
Referring to the drawings the invention is shown as comprising a body section A and a try-square section B. The body section A includes a tongue portion 10 and a blade portion 11, while the section B includes a tongue portion 12 and a blade portion 13. The body portion A is formed from a metal blank indicated at C in Fig. 6. This blank is so shaped that when same is folded upon itself it will form the tongue portion 10 and the blade portion 11 with the tongue portion having a longitudinal passage therethrough in which the tongue portion 12 of the section B is slidably engaged. The blank C further includes oppositely disposedly tongues 14 which when the blank is folded upon itself form means for securing a spirit level 15 in place along the inner edge of the tongue portion 10 of the section B. The edges of the blade and tongue section of the trysquare sections B are suitably sealed in inches and fractions thereof as at 16.
In the use of the invention as a caliper the blade 13 is moved away from the blade 11 and said blades passed into embracing relation with the object to be measured. The blades 11 and 13 are then moved toward each other until they engage opposite sides of the object respectively, when the reading along the inner edge of the tongue 12 which registers with the outer edge of the blade 11 will indicate the thickness of the object being measured. The manner of using the device as a try-square, level and rule will be obvious.
What is claimed is v A device of the class described formed from a metal blank folded upon itself to produce a body portion having long and short arms disposed at right angles to each other with the long arm having a longitudinal passage therethrough, and a try-square having its tongues slidably engaged in said passage whereby the blade of said try-square may be moved toward and away from the short arm of the body.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH w. MAXWELL.
Witnesses:
