Description
JOHN R. SOMERS, OF CHARLESTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAGE.
Application filed September 15, 1916.
T0 ZZ 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN R. SoMnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlestown, in the county of Suolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain useful Improwements in Gages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in gages, one object of the invention being the provision of a surface and depth gage attachment for combination sets, whereby the device is quickly manipulated to be presented at any one of the graduated portions of the scale and by means of which the gage member may be positioned and held at such desired point and at any desired angle.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a gage of this character which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, and thoroughly efficient and practical in use.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device.
F ig. 2 is a detail view of the attachment per se.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail views thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the rule member of the device, and 11 the handle member thereof, both of which are of usual construction.
Mounted for sliding movement upon the member 10 is a. frame 12 which is preferably made from a single piece of metal and provided with the receiving slot 13 and with the split end 14, so that the device 12 will act as a clamp to resiliently grip the member 10.
The split end of the member 12 is pro- Speccation of Letters Patent.

any desired inclination -or position before being clamped, while the member 12 which is provided with the oppositely disposed observation slots 23 may also be adjusted so as to place the indication marks 24 thereof adjacent any graduation of the member 10.
What I claim as new is:-
In combination a ruler having indicated graduated marks on opposite sides, a rectangular member having a transverse slot through which the ruler slidably projects and having formed upon opposite sides thereof elongated slots intersecting the plane of the first named slot so as to provide sight openings upon opposite sides of said member to expose the indications upon the sides of a ruler, said last named elongated slotbeing formed at opposite ends of the slot and at opposite sides of said member with longitudinally disposed beveled edges forming knife edges with the opposing end edges of said slot, said beveled edges projecting at their outer ends beyond the opposite longitudinal edges of the ruler, the knife edges of said beveled edges being segmental and said beveled edges having a line eX- tending across its length centrally thereof adapted to check up with any of the graduated marks on said ruler.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
JOHN R. SOMERS.
