The nature of'the present invention consists in the inse oi'wedge-pieces, facedwith rubber, or otherA suitablernaterial, fastendto the jambc`asings,'and arranged "to itf'correspondiugly-shaped rabbets in the stile's'of i the sash, whereby, when the latter are. closed,-they will be drawn4 closely to the stops, and thus ,shut out wind and rain; and further, ina wedge-piece, also faced with rubber, which" is arranged to slide between the meetingfrails, and protect this part of thewindw. and fastened to the j am b-casing A, in such positions .as to bring one of the rubber facings of each upper wedge againstlthe inside oftheouter` top B, and one of the facings of each lower wedgeagainst the edgevofl the inside stop D, iig.- 1.
By this means the upper and lower sash, when they are rabbeted out, as shown at iig. 3,' will wedge between the partition-stop O and the wedges E G, and thus not only` keep the sash' from rattling, but excludel water, and prevent a draught of air through the window.
'The devices for closing the joint between the meetingirails are show n at figs. 5' and 6, and they consist 'of a wedge-shaped piece, K, which is faced with rubber, or other suitable material, on both of its edges,- an'd operates between a strip of wood, J, projecting upward `f 'rom'the inside of the meeting-rail of the upper sash, and a wedge-shaped strip, L, fastened to the top of the meeting-rail of the lower sash, both strips being madeof the same thickness as the sliding wedge l shown in perspective at iig. 6. A lever, fm, is pivoted to the meeting-rail of the lower sash, near'its end, and it has a connecting link or rod fastened to a staple, S, which is driven into the `larger end of the wedge-strip K.
'This strip is moved longitudinally, by means ofthe aforesaid lever, to tighten the joint of the meetingfrails, and it `is heldin place by means of screws V,
fig.'5, put through slots made vertically in it, said slots being made long enough to allow the strip K to have a proper movement.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination ofthe Wedge-shaped strips E G', faced with elastic material, stops B G D, and sash H, the latter. having grooves I I, corresponding to the form of said' strips, as and for the-purpose set forth.
