Laim Paten No. 95,267, dated samba 2s,
1869; animated-September 22, 1869.
Thechedule referred to-in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whomitmwy concern: I y Beit known that I, HENRY Reunion, of Chicago, in the countyof Cook, and State of Illinoisfhavc iny vented an vIrnpi'overnent'in .Water-Proofs for Windows, and I `do hereby declare that the' following is a full, clear, and exact descrption'thereof, which will enable others skilled in the ait to make and use the: Y same, reference beinghad to theaccompanying draw, ings, making a part of this description, in which- 4 Figure `1 is an elevation of the jamb-casiug ofl an ordinary window-frame, with thewedgepieces in posi-V tion for tightening the sash. v v i Figure 2, a transversersection of the same, taken on the line xx, igfl. y ,y
Figure 3, a perspective representation of asasli formed to`tit thewedge-pieces.
\ i Figure 4, aperspectlve representation of one of 'the wedge-pieces removed from the jamb-casing. v Figure 5, a horizontal section of a window-flame,
taken above 4the meeting-rails ofthe sash, and on the linez z,fig.1. f f i Figure `o, a perspective representation of the wedgepiece used to tighten the joints ofthe meetingerails.
The nature of'the present invention consists in the inse oi'wedge-pieces, facedwith rubber, or otherA suitablernaterial, fastendto the jambc`asings,'and arranged "to itf'correspondiugly-shaped rabbets in the stile's'of i the sash, whereby, when the latter are. closed,-they will be drawn4 closely to the stops, and thus ,shut out wind and rain; and further, ina wedge-piece, also faced with rubber, which" is arranged to slide between the meetingfrails, and protect this part of thewindw. A, iigs.` 1, 2, and 3, represents the jamb-casing of a wndowfran1e,and. i -r .D OB are inside,^partition, and outside` stops, all `of which have `the ordinary construction; `therefore 'nothing is claimedin this regard. Y j
1 E G represent wedge-shaped pieces oi'- wood, which are faced Ywithl rubber ff, or other suitable material,
and fastened to the j am b-casing A, in such positions .as to bring one of the rubber facings of each upper wedge againstlthe inside oftheouter` top B, and one of the facings of each lower wedgeagainst the edgevofl the inside stop D, iig.- 1.
By this means the upper and lower sash, when they are rabbeted out, as shown at iig. 3,' will wedge between the partition-stop O and the wedges E G, and thus not only` keep the sash' from rattling, but excludel water, and prevent a draught of air through the window.
'The devices for closing the joint between the meetingirails are show n at figs. 5' and 6, and they consist 'of a wedge-shaped piece, K, which is faced with rubber, or other suitable material, on both of its edges,- an'd operates between a strip of wood, J, projecting upward `f 'rom'the inside of the meeting-rail of the upper sash, and a wedge-shaped strip, L, fastened to the top of the meeting-rail of the lower sash, both strips being madeof the same thickness as the sliding wedge l shown in perspective at iig. 6. Y*
A lever, fm, is pivoted to the meeting-rail of the lower sash, near'its end, and it has a connecting link or rod fastened to a staple, S, which is driven into the `larger end of the wedge-strip K.
'This strip is moved longitudinally, by means ofthe aforesaid lever, to tighten the joint of the meetingfrails, and it `is heldin place by means of screws V,
fig.'5, put through slots made vertically in it, said slots being made long enough to allow the strip K to have a proper movement.
,Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination ofthe Wedge-shaped strips E G', faced with elastic material, stops B G D, and sash H, the latter. having grooves I I, corresponding to the form of said' strips, as and for the-purpose set forth.
.2. The combination of the wedge-shaped'strip K, strips J L, lever m, connecting-rod P, and sash H, as.
described and shown.
