M. UMSTADTER, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
Leners Patent No. 85,876, dated .mma/ry 12, 1869.
IMPRovEMENT 1N .HINGE-STOP.
To all whom it ma/y concern Beit known that I, M. UMSTADTER, of Norfolk, county of Norfolk, and State of Virginia, have invented certain nevi7 and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters of 'reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of the two leaves of the hinge.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same.
Figure 3 is an elevation edge an angle. 1
Figure 4 is a View ofthe hinges on the lid of a chest.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing a hinge, that it will answer the double purpose of a hinge and shutter-fastener, thus obviating the necessity of leaning'out of the window to fasten or unfasten the shutter.
By my device, shutters can also be bowed]1 when desired, and caused to retain the position in which they may be placed. ,t
My invention is also applicable to doors and lids of causing the salme to' beheld wide open or partly closed, as desired, thus discarding the use of the numerous devices for laccotmplishing that purpose.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A A are the leaves of the hinge.
The leafAis cast with an additional piece, B, semicircular. in form, at or near its centre, and peipendicuiar to the face of the leaf.
This piece B is provided with cuts b b, on the outer edge of the semicircle, and extends beyond the but of view of the hinge, on
the hinge a distance equal to that cast on the leaf.
The leaf A is provided with a slot, a, which extei from the but to near the centre of the leaf, and is m: sufficiently wide to allow the semicircular piece B freely pass through it when the hinge is being opel or closed.
This leat A' is also provided with a pawl, C, and b ton c, near the interior end ofthe slot a.
This pawl O fits in the cuts b b of the semicircu piece, and keeps the shutter or door 'partly open, 2 when the sh utter or door is entirely open, the two lea forming one straight line, the pawl C fits in the sp: between the face ofthe leaf A and the bottom of 1 semicireular piece B, thus preventing the door or w dow from being shut.
The button c is so arranged on the leaf, that the pz O, when it falls, becomes fastened, thus providing z ditional means for preventing the pawl G from giv way, no matter what strain maybe brfiiught to b1 upon it, either in attempting to open or close the hin,
The leaf A is also provided with a recess, d, imn diately next to the inner end ofthe s emicircular pie B, in which rests the pawl O and the button c, wh the hinge is closed.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secr by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination of the pivoted pawl C and butt c, with the notched disk B and leaf of a hinge, all z ranged and constructed as described and. shown.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name this specification,` in the presence of two subseiibii witnesses.
M. UMSTADTER. Witnesses:
E'QWIN JAMES, JOHN S. Honnnresnnnn.
