B. r. BARKEmoF SAN FRANCISCO, cALiroRNIa Letters Patent No. 68,150, dated August 27, 1867;
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTT-HINGES.
'ro ALL WHoM rr MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that, I, B. F. BAKKER, of San Francisco, in thc county of San Francisco, and State of Cali fornia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding-Door Butt; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to the peculiar manner in which a butthinge for doors which open or swing both ways folds into itself, it being a reversible rabbeted hinge; and the invention consists in forming a butt in such a manner that it shall be a three-leaf butt folding into itself, two of which placed together form a single butt working alternately as the door swings back and forth from the centre, and also in the manner of attachment of the butt to the door'and easing, and in the mnfller attached to the same, as will beidescribed;
Figure 1 represents the butt attached to the door, with the door open and thrown buck, it being a vertical section through the line z x of g. 2.
Figure 2 shows the butt as it appears with the door closed, with the plate lapped on to the door and casing.
Figure 3 shows a side view with one of the leaves folded. I
Figure 4 shows an edge view of the butt or the three leaves or parts of which it is composed.
Figure 5 is a view of a plate which is attached to the door and casing against which the butt is placed.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts: v
A represents a metallic plate, which is fitted to the edge of the door and to the casing, as seen in fig. 5. There are holes for screws through this plate which correspond with the screw-holes through the butt, so that the same screws fasten both plate and butt to the door or casing. The other Vholes through this plate, marked a, correspond with holes in the edge of the do'or or casing, in which I place a small spiral spring, which is held in place by ascrew, the head of which is sunk in a piece of gotta percha marked C, which projects through the plate suflciently far to receive the concussion of' the door when it swings to the centre, mulling the sound occasioned by the door closing. The gutta-percha muiiler is pressed out by the spiral spring. Other elastic substances may answer-the same purpose, and perhaps the4 spiral spring might be'dispensed with. The edges ofthe plate A are turned at right angles on to the sides of the door and casing, forming a handsome finish, as
seen in fig. 2. B is the butt itself; it is formed as seen in figs, 3 and 4.4 'Iwo of them are placed side by side,
as seen in iig. .1, each butt folding into itself as the door closes, and acting alternately as the door swings either way from its centre. These butts act in connection with a spring and bracket attached 4to theA top ofthe door and easing, as seen in fig. 1, and for which I have already received Letters Patentof the United States.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim'as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
1. A'Ihe three-leaf folding butt constructed substantially as herein shown and described, the t'wo forming a reversible hinge, and acting alternately, substantially as set forth. Y
2. I claim the plate A, in combination with the butt, substantially as described.
3. I claim the muler, substantially as described, in combination with the butt, as and for the purposes specified.
B. F. BARKER.
Witnesses:
WM. F. McNAMARA, ALEX. F. Ronan'rs.
