f IMPROVEMENT IN GATE EIN GES.
itt: Signals referat tt in time rtter @tout ant making part tf the tame.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. WATSON, of Richmond, (Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings, which accompany and form part of. this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hinge.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, cheap, strong gate hinge, capable of being readily adjusted, so as to compensate for the expansion and contraction of the fence, and the action of frost upon the gate post, and is intended as an improvement upon a gate hinge for a similar purpose patented to me on' the 13th of October, 1863.
. The nature of my invention consists in constructing a hinge in three parts, and allowing a. lateral motion of i the wing of the hinge independent of the bracket to which it is attached.
In the drawings, isi that part of the hinge which is attached to the post, and may be constructed in any of the ordinary forms. B is a bar or wing hinged to the part A at E, and provided with a slot or longitudinal opening, F. The bracket C is attached to the stile of the gate by any suitable device, and is provided with a gain or opening in its face, with bevelled edges to receive the bar or wing B, the corresponding surfaces of each forming a dove-tail slide. Attached to the back side of the bracket C is a screw-bolt, passing through the slot F and operated by a thumb-piece, D, which is rigidly attached to the screw-bolt and turns it. Thelobject of this arrangement is to prevent the screw and thnmb-piece from being separated, or being. jarred or shaken 0E by the concussion or slamming of the gate. The inner surface of the bar or wing B may be constructed with grooves or corrugations fitting into corresponding ones upon the surface of thatpartof the bracket C with which it comes in contact, so as more effectually to prevent displacement. My hingevmay also be made so that the joint at E shall consist of the requisite separate inclination necessary to form a self-shutting gate inthe usual form.
Having thus fully described my said improvement, what I cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the but A, bar or wing B, bracket C, and thumb-piece and screw-bolt D, when constructed and operating as and for the purposes set forth.
JAMES T'. WATSON.
