Description

v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEO. M. WOOD, OF DEOATUR, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED DOOR-BOLT. A
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,241, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, Gr. M. WOOD, ot' Decatur, in the county ot` Macon and State of Illinois, have invented anew and Improved Slide-Bolt; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specilication, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention, taken in the line ./r a', Fig. 3; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section ot" the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an outer view ot' the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
This in vrntion relates to a new and improved slide-bolt, designed more especially for doors, windows, Sac., but capable ot' being used in all cases where slide-bolts are required.
The object ot' the invention is to obtain a simple and efficient slide-bolt, and one which may be constructed at a small cost.
A represents the bolt, which may be of seinicircular form in its transverse section, and of any desirable dimensions. The bolt is hollow its entire length, closed at its ends, and has a longitudinal slot, c, in its bottom or inner side, which is a plane, as shown clearlyin Fig. 2. This bolt may be of wrought or cast metal.
B is a metal plate, which has a longitudinal slot, b, made in it, and is secured to the door O or other article to which the bolt is to be applied by screws D, and the bolt A is secured to the plate B by the same screws, which pass through the slot c in the inner side of the bolt and the slot b in the plate.
The heads of the screws D project over the edges of the slot a, and the screws serve as guides for the bolt A, and the end screws serve as stops for the same, limiting its sliding movement.
The bolt A is provided with a knob, E, which screws into it, and by unscrewing the knob the screws D- may be screwed into the door O through the, slots a b. the bolt A being moved' or adjusted so that the hole in which the knob is screwed will be brought successively over the points 1, 2, 3, and 4, the screw l heilig tirst put in, and then the screw 2, and so on. (See Fig. l.
F represents the keeper into which the end of the bolt A passes, and which may be applied in such a manner as to be adjustable to compensate for shrinkage. This bolt may be mauufa-ctured at a very reasonable cost, and may be used in all cases where slide-bolts can be applied. i
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The semicircular hollow bolt A, provided with a longitudinal slot, a, in its inner side, and a hole for a knob on its out-side, in combination with the plate B, having a longitudinal slot, b, in it i'orthe screws D to pass through and secure the plate and bolt to the door or other article to which the boltis to be applied, all constructed substantially as A shown and described.
