MPROVEMENT IN SLIDING HINGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,684, .dated February 17, 1863.

.To all whom it may concern,.-

Beit known that we, JAMES M. EVELETH and GEORGE O. MOORE, of the town of Oroville, in the county of Butte and State 0f California, have invented a new and useful sliding hinge for the use and purpose of overcoming the disadvantage of the shrinking and swelling of gates and doors; vand We d0 hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a front view of the hinge; Fig. 3, a side view; Fig. 4, an end view.

Letter A, Fig. 2, the main plate attached to the gate-post or door-jainb; B, the plate forming the part of the hinge attached tothe gate or door, C, the sliding part of the hinge;

-D D, flanges attached to the main plate A,

forming grooves, in which the sliding part C works; E, nut attached to the slide O; F, a ange attached to the main plate A; G, a thuinb-screw, which works in iiange F with shoulder on each side of ilange, thence screwing into nut E on the sliding part O. Thus by turning the th umb-screW Gr, which revolves in ange F, the sliding part of the hinge O is drawn backward or shoved forward, as may be required, carrying with it the other part of the hinge or plate B, which is attached to the gate 0r door. Thus, by allowing sufiicient space or pla-y between the door and jainb or gate and post, the gate or door, should they either shrink or swell, is kept in perfect Working order b v merely turning the thumb-screw, as described.

What We claim as ourown invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A sliding hinge the uses and purposes of which are to overcome the disadvantage arising from the shrinking and swelling of gates and doors, as herein described.
