Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
BURTON GREENSIDE, OF FORT DODGE, IOWA.
IMPROVED GATE-HINGE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,211, dated October 30, 1866.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, BURTON GREENsIDE, of Fort Dodge,Webster county, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gate-Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin gdrawin gs, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a gate with my improved hinge attached, part of the hinge and post being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken through the line or, Fig. l., looking upward.
Similar letters of reference indicate like O parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved hinge for hanging gates and doors; and it consists, first, in a cogged hinge, constructed as hereinafter more fully described; and, second, in the combination of a bent lever, connecting-rod, and arm with each other and Y with the gate and post.
v A is the gate, and B the front gate-post, about the construction of which there is nothing new. C is an ordinary hinge, which is attached to the gate A and to the rear post, D, in the usual manner. E is the lower hinge, which is cast in two parts, el and c2. The part e is cast with a downwardly-projecting flange, e3, by means of which it is attached to the post D by screws, as shown in Fig. 1. Upon the under side of the part el is cast a projecting half-circle, e4, as shown, and upon the shoulder 'or circular edge of this projection e4 are formed cogs, into which mesh the cogs formed upon the edge of the part e2 ofthe hinge, as seen in Fig. 2. The part e2 is also formed with a down- In the ease of a gate or door designed to, swing only in one direction but half of this hinge will be needed-that is to say, the cogs may be formed on an arc of ninety degrees instead of ou a half-circle, as described.
F is a lever bent at right angles and pivoted i in a slot formed in the post D, as shown in Fig. l. The projecting end of this lever F is weighted, as shown in the drawings, and to its other end is pivoted a connecting-rod, G, which passes through a slot in the post D, and is pivoted to an arm, H, attached to the gate A, as shown in Fig. 1. This attachment is designed to be used with light gates, to close them when left open; but in the case of large or heavy gates it will not be needed, as their own weight will be sufficient to close them. without other assistance.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The cogged hinge E, formed in two parts, el and o2, when constructed and .arranged substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the bent lever F, connecting-rod Gr, and arm H with each other, and with the gate A, the weight, and post D, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
BURTON GREENSIDE.
