TO ALL `WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:

Be it known that I, ALVAH WISWLL, of the city, county, and State of NewYork, have invented a new and improved Combination of Spring and Hinge for doors, window-blinds, vete.; and I'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andV exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention consists in a novel and improved combination of a spring and hinge, as hereinafter fully shown'and'described, whereby the spring is rendered subservient inikeeping the door or blind in both an open and a closed state, so as to render unnecessary the use offastenings for that purpose,and also rendered capable of closing the door or blind after being partially opened,-and ofbeing graduated so as to operate with a greater or less degree of strength, as may be required., In the accompanying drawings-- Figure Il represents an outer view of my invention applied toa door, blind, or shutter.

A B represent the two leaves of a butt-hinge, which does not differ from those in ordinary use, with the Vexception that the upper edge of the movable leaf B of the hinge has an arm, C, projecting horizontally from it, said arm having a friction-roller, a, upon it at its outer end. The lower edge of the xed leaf A oi' the hinge has a plate, b, extending horizontally from it, said plate being provided with a vertical pin, c, on which the lower part of a spiral spring, D, is Fitted, the lower end cl of the spring bearing against the side of the leaf A, in order to prevent the former from turning onthe pin c. In the/upper end of the spring D there is fitted a pin, e, provided with a shoulder or enlargemenaf, int-o which the upper end of the'spring-is fitted, and the pin e above the shoulder vor enlargementf passes through la plate, g, which exten/ds horizontally from the upper end of the fixed leaf A. The pin e is allowed to turn freely in the plate g, is of square form, on which a bar, E, is fitted, and bears against the friction-roller a on the arm C, the bar E pressing-against the roller a with a force or power due to the strength of the spring D. By referring to iig. 2 it will be seen that when the door or blind F is closed, the bar E will keep it in a closed state, and` when the door`or blind is opened, as shown in red outline, the bar E will keep it in an open state. The strength of the spring D may be' made greater or less by changingV the position of the bar E ou the square at the upper ond of the pin e, as the spring is a torsional one, and consequently its power may be increased or diminished by turning it to give it a greater or less degree of twist. The spring is twisted in order to adjust the bar E upon the square of the pin e by means of a wrench fitted on the square just above the plate g.

The combination of the spring and hinge, as herein shown `and described, is superior to the plan hitherto devised of having the spring'around the pintle of the hinge. My improvement is less complicated, may be construeted at a less cost, and is n ot liable to get out of repair. It possesses the advantage also of holding the door or blind both in an open and a closed state. l

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The spring D, combined with the bar E, arm C, provided with a friction-roller, @and the hinge, all arranged to operate in the manner substantially as shown and described.
