Description
Q nitrh tats kunt ss. @i s D C@ ISAAC H. MeOM'BEH-OF EL PASO, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 68,37p dated Scptemcr 3,- 1857.
IMPROVEMENT 1N GATES.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
. Be it known that I, ISAAC H. McOMBi-m, of El Paso, in the county of Woodford, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates and do hereby declare that the followingris a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being'had t0 the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot`. reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A and A represent the two gate-posts. B
- represents the gate, which may be constructed in any of the known and usual ways. C C and D D represent metallic staples, sharpened'at one end and having eyes in their other. The rods C are driven into the rear har l of the gate, and the hrads D are driven intoA the rear gate-post A, their eyes being left out, as represented. E represents a. shaft, which runs through the eyes of the rods C and D, connecting the gate to the post, and forming a. hinge, upon which the gate turns. At the foot of the rear post A is placed a block. G, which lies beneath the gate when it (the gate) is closed. This block has a V-shnped slot in it, which \said slot is tapered or inclined from 2:' to'z, or from the top to the betteln, as represented. Upon the block, just back of the top of the groove or slot, is a slight depression. H represents a roller or wheel, which is placed in a slot in the rear bur of the gate, and crossn'ise of the gate, and is intended for running up and ldown the inclined sides of the groove in the block, for elevating and lowering the gate as it is opened or closed. When the gate is wide open the roller H passes into the depression back of the top of tne groove, and is thus held open. In shutting the gute. i.' is only necessary to slant the roller from the depression until it reaches the inclination on the-block. 'lhen thi` weight of the gate, together with the action of a spring, F, causes it to close and latch. The spring F is coiled around the shaft E between the two staples C C, and bearing from a pin on Ythe shaft at its upper end against thc lower rod C, gives additional weight to the gate, so as to cause it to close.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,v and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The block G, roller H, staple C and bolt D, shaft E, and spring F, constructedaud arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of May, 1867.
