Letters Patent No. 64,289, dated April 30, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Be it known that I, A. O. DIVINE, of Cambria Mills, in the county of Hillsdale, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part ot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved gate.
Figure 2, a plan view ot' the saine when folded and swung open.
My improved gate is designed more especially for farm purposes-j' and the invention consists in hinging the gate at the centre, so that one-half" may be opened, when required, without disturbing the other portion, and the full passage opened by partially sliding back the gate, swinging it around, and folding the two portions together, as hereinafter fully described. v
In the drawings, A B represent the two portions of my gate, hinged together at the centre in any suitable manner, so that the portion A may be opened by swinging around when only a narrow passageis required, shown in red lines, iig. 1. The portion B is mounted between-two posts, C D, and supported by one of its boards, E, resting upon a small frietion-wheelJ', in the upper edge of the cross-piece g, which connects the two as shown. At the centre the gate is lsupported by a friction-roller, e, mounted in the bottom of the upright or cross-piece I of the portion Il, which operates in a`suitable way, m, secured to the bed-piece O, or formed therein.
when the entire gate'is required to be opened it is tirst slid back, as represented in red lines, disengaging the` roller from the way m, when the gate is swung around, and the parts A B at the same time folded together in the position shown in iig. 2, where, if required, it may be fastened by a hook, a, attached to the post D, which catches over one of thc boards. By making one side of the way m at the rear shorter than the other, .the longer side will act as a stop for the roller 7:, so that in swinging the gate around in closing it the roller-will strike against the longer side, as shown in red lines, and thence be readily guided by the same into the way, when the gate is slid forward and parts A B unfolded, again closing the passage. In the majority of instances when a passage is required, one ot' narrow width, that will admit a man or beast, is sufficient. By the use of my improvement such a passage eau be readily etl`eeted by simply opening the portion A, without the labor and inconvenience of sliding back .and opening the whole gate, which, in passages that are much used, becomes a matter of considerable importance. My improvement also secures thc advantage of enabling the gate to be opened to its full width with much less .e'ort than usual, las, when the part A is swung open on its `hinged axis, it is only required to slide the part B haltl its length, when the whole gate is balanced on the pulley f and swings around with slight effort to open the passage fully. This construction makes it morepeompact than other gates of equal width, and enables itto be used in many situations where there is not space to swing or slide a gate of full length.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
A gate constructed of Ythe hinged 'parts A B, as described, in combination with the Way m, friction-rollers h and f, and catch s, so arranged as to form at once a swinging, sliding, andvfolding gate, substantially as set forth. i I
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALLEN O. DIVINE.
