Description
B. CLOUGH.
Gate.
Patented Sept. 25, 1866" for;
j I I N PETERS. Pholu-ulhn n mr. wuhlngmn, 0.;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BAXTER OLOUGH, OF AMHERST, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent N0. 58,218, dated September 25, 1866..
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, B. OLOUGH, of Amherst, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of thecoustruction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top View of the gate when closed. Fig. 2 is an end view with the gate open. Fig. 3 is a view from the point A, Fig. 1, when open.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views.
In the drawings, B represents the gate,
which is hung at a to the guys and lower plates, a pin, a, passing through the guys and top board of the gate as represented, and a point from the under side of the gate resting in the plate, as shown at 0, Fig. 2. Thus the gate can be moved very easily. B represents the lower plates, and O 0 guys. These plates and guys are held in place and supported by the posts A.
Extending from the guys in an inclined position to the lower plates are the counterbraces D D, which are to aid in supporting and strengthening said plates and guys.
bl) are posts at one end of the gate. Near the post b is another post, 0. The gate is double between the posts 11 b, there being boards on each side of the posts, as shown at E, Fig. 3. In making the gate these posts can be cut out and the boards inserted, as at the posts I) b, or the boards can be nailed to the posts, as at the other end of the gate.
The object of making the gate double is to aid in strengthening it, and also in supporting the other end of the gate.
The weights d are placed between the boards at the double end of the gate. (Shown in Fig.2.)
When the gate is in the position shown' in Fig. 1, the guy 0 will prevent it from sagging, and when open, as indicated by the dotted. lines F, in Fig. 1, the guy 0 is for the same purpose, the double end of the gate acting as a counter-balance, by the means of which-the gate requires no force to open it, as it will swing without much effort.
The gate can be opened either in the direction indicated by the dotted lines F, or the red lines F, as desired.
This gate will be found very convenient and durable, and can be made cheap, most any farmer being able to make his own. The weights can be of stone or any other cheap article. Doors for barns and other similar structures can be hung in the same way.
What Iclaim as rnyimprovement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The gate B, arranged and hung as specified, in combination with the guys 0 0, plates 13, posts A, and counter-braces D D, as and for the purpose set forth.
BAXTER OLOUGH.
