IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATE.

The Schedule referred to n these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom tt may concern Be itknown that I, JAMES BAUGHMAN, of Sueld township, in the county of Port-age, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farin-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw-- ings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of the gate.

This invention relates to a gate, the construction of which is such that it is opened by being lifted upward, and at the same time backward, by means of a pair of parallel vibrating standards, to which the gate is att-ached and supported on being opened and closed.

A, iig. Il, represents the gate, which is or may be constructed in t-he ordinary way.

B and G are two pairs of vibrating standards, one member of each pair being arranged on each side of `the gate, and the two pairs parallel lto each other, as shown in 'the drawing, in which it will be seen that the lower ends of the standards are pivoted near to the ground, whereas the upper ends are pivoted to the gate B, at the. upper corner, and 0at or about the 'middle 1) is a counterbalance, pivoted at the point a to the post E.

The upper end of said balance is attached to the gate by the link F, the purpose of which will preseutly be'show'n. v

The practical operation of this gate is as follows:

' The gate is represented as being closed. Hence, in order to open it, itis pulled back in direction of the arrow, at the same time it is lifted'upward by the standards, as indicated by the red lines b.

Tofassist in this upward and backward movement of the gate, is the purpose of the eouuterbalance D, which, being about equal in Weight to the gate, it is pulled back thereby, when assisted by a little personal ebrt.

By this meansl the gate is easily opened,aud as it is lifted from the ground while being opened, snowdrifts, side-hills, &c., will not be in theway of opening the gate.
