Description
0. E. SEYMOUR.
Farm Gate.
Patented Dec. 1, 1868 W 'j fiiraa a; it mil fiiatwgateut bifm.
O. SEYMOUR, OF MYADIS ON, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 84,512, dated December 1, 1868; antedated Septembcnlii, 1868.
IDEPROVEIWENT' IN FARMG-ATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that '1, O. E. SEYMOUR, of Madison, in the county of J efi'erson, and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in FarmsGates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a ful1, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of gates which may be opened or closed by a person on horseback, or in a vehicle, through the medium of levers; and
My improvement consists in the arrangement of a series of levers with a triangular bell-crank, in such a manner that the gate may be opened by sliding it in a direction at right angles to'the roadway, the friction being lessened by means of sheaves in the gate-stiles, rollingon a track placed so as to insure that object.
The figure is a perspective view of the gate.
A A are sills, crossing each other at right angles, as shown.
' At their junction is the slotted post B, through which the gate passes. V
Along the centre of the sill A is the track It.
The lower ends of the gate-stiles n n are slotted for the reception of the sheaves t t, which roll on the trackk.
On the sides of the posts 'm m are pivoted the handlevers G G. These levers are attached, by means of the connecting-rods s s, with the bell crank F, in the manneras shown, while the third arm of the crank is connected with the lever b by the draw-bar c.
To the upper end of thelever bis pivoted the bar a, said bar being connected by a pin with the top bar of the gate. I 7
At 0 is seen a spike, projecting from the front style of the gate, and which enters a suitable catch or staple on the gate-post C.
The drawing shows the gate open.
Bythrowing the levers G G inward the gate is closed,
as indicated in-red lines.
The direction of the roadway is indicated by the arrow. 7 I
.Having thus described my invention,
'What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The above-described. combination, consisting of the hand-levers G G, rods '8 3, bars a and c', and lever b, used in connection with the triangular bell-crank F, or its equivalent, substantially inthe manner and for the purposes as set forth.
