Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,551, dated October 7, 1873 application filed September 9, 1873.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. WHEELER, of Corinth, in the county of Alcorn and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speciiication.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of farm-gates designed to be opened and closed by the operator without alighting from the saddle or vehicle in which he may be traveling.
This invention relates to gates in which the person passing through the same opens and closes the gate without dismounting from the animal or vehicle; and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more `fully described and pointed out by the claim.

In the accompanying drawing, A is the Vrear gate-post, provided with the upper bearing B, in which the upper axis of the heelpost C turns. The lower axis of the same rests in a step, made in any suitable material, fixed in the ground or attached to the gatepost A. D is the front gate-post, provided with a notch, E, and keeper F. A spring, O, keeps the latch in place when no power is eX- erted upon it. The gate G may be of ordinary construction, but should bev provided with a top rail, I, suiiiciently heavy to admit of attaching the oscillating spring-latch H.
The latch H is composed of a T-shaped piece, one arm of which is pivoted in the top rail I, and the other perforated to attach a rope for operating the latch. The stem of the T- shaped piece works vertically in a slot, J, in the upper end of the front upright piece of the gate, and engages with' the keeper E on the post D. Compound oscillating levers K K' are pivoted to the top of posts L L, on opposite sides of the gate, nearly or quite in line with the post A. The pivots constitute the fulcrums of the levers K K'.' A wire rope, M, is secured to the end of the lever K, passed through an eyebolt, N, in the front of the heelpost C, and secured to an S-shaped link, which is connected by a wire or rope, Q, to the perforated arm of the T-shaped latch. A wire rope, M', connects the end ofthe lever K' with the S-shaped link in a similar manner. The ropes M M' connect the oscillating levers K K' vinto simple levers of the iirst class. VA wire rope, P, secured to the lever K between the fulcrum and the power, is passed to the rear of the heel-post C around the slide thereof, opposite to the lever K, through the eyebolt N, and secured to the S-shaped link. A wire rope, P', connects the lever K' with the S-shaped link in a similar manner. The wire ropes P P' connect the levers K K' into sim-V ple levers of the second class. They are, therefore, compound levers, as they are ol' both the first and second class.
Drawing the power end of the lever .K away from the gate operates the wire rope P, raises the latch H, and throws the gate open from the lever K' when shut, but closes it when open, and swings toward the lever K. Pushing the lever K toward the gate operates the wire rope M and closes the gates when opened from the lever K, but opens it toward the lever K when shut. The lever K' operates the ropes M' and P', and opens and closes the gate from the other side in precisely the same manner as the lever K and ropes M and P.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the cords P P' and M M' in front of the gate-postA, with the handlevers K K', heel-post C, latch-cord Q, and latch H, for opening and closing the gate in either direction, as herein specified.
