To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, J AMES A,. CLEMENTS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Abingdon, in the county of Knox and State. of Illi+ nois, have invented certain. new. and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; and I do hereby .declare that the following is a full, .clear,.and exact description of the same, reference being .had tothe annexed drawings, making. a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon."
The present invention has relation tothat class of farm-gates provided with operatinglevers connectingv with. the. latchxthereof through. suitable mechanism and ropes or v pulls dependingfrom the levers, whereby the same may be operated by equestrians or personsin vehicles; and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and practical swinging gate, with means connecting therewith for the opening and closing, thereof, without the necessity of dismounting from a horse or vehicle, said operating mechanism being both simple and perfect. in its. action, as well as strong and durable.

A suitable lever B connects Withthepost A, and asimilarflever E connects with the post F, said lever having depending handle bars or pulls (Z a, respectively, for operating the levers by the person in the vehicle, said levers and the handle bars or pulls beingof anypreferred construction. The guide-bracket I, as well as the guide- I strap f, may be of'any preferred construction, and any suitable guides on the post and controlling lever, respectively, which are adapted to engage with each other and which will provide means for guiding the controllinglever in its movement, -may besubstituted for the construction shown, such means wardly in order to set the guide-bracket to throw the downwardly-extending handle bars or pulls d a over the driveway tothe point desired. cured to the gate, the extremity or end of the bracket is, which is also secured to the gate. The end of the horizontal controlling-bar K has pivotally and adjustably connected thereto a suitable link L, said link at its lower end being pivotally connected to a bell-crank lever M, pivoted to the gate. To this bellcrank lever M is connected one end of a rod N, which engages guide-loops Z upon the gate, the opposite end of the rod engaging the gatelatch 0. (Shown in detail in Fig. 4 of the drawings.)
The latch O is pivoted to the gate at m in any preferred manner found most practical,
said latch at its lower or pivotal end having a mortised seat a for a coiled spring P, the free ends of the spring bearing against the shoulder 0 upon the side of the latch and the opposite end of the spring bearing against that portion of the upright shown at p.
The latch O has a hook q to enable the end of the wire rod N to engage therewith through the medium of a loop w, or any other means may be provided that will form a loose connection between the latch and rod, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to any particular construction of latch or the spring connecting therewith, as any suitable spring-actuated latch of whatever construction may be substituted for the latch shown that will successfully operate to lock the gate closed or release it when desired.
The gate-latch O in the present instance has an elbow s for engaging a keeper 2, in the gatepost 0 to hold the gate in a closed position. A stop-pin it upon the latch is adjustable by being engaged with one of a plurality of holes 4;, the adjusted position of the pin limiting the extent of movement of the latch as circumstances would require.
.It should be noticed that the latch is entirely independent of the operating levers whensin its normal position and can be used as a hand-latch, by means of the depending handle Q thereon, to enable it to be operated by the hand, as in case an equestrian wishes to pass through.
The upwardly-exten ding hook q, with which the loop 10 engages, may be changed in form and construction so long as the connections will admit of the latch being operated by hand independent of the several levers when found desirable.
The lever E and the controlling-lever H are in reality one common lever, and I have shown it in the drawings as two separate levers spliced together; but this is not essential, as the lever may be constructed in one separate piece of material and of suflicient length to extend beyond the post, to which may be connected the handle bar or pull.
The adjustability of the guide-bracketmay be obtained in any suitable and well-known manner, and one means shown to render the bracket adjustable to or from the post A resides in the nuts a, engaging the scrcw-thremled ends of the arms 7) of the bracket, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
The gate may be adjusted vertically on the rod 6 and held in its adjusted position by a set-screw c, which passes through the eye of the upper one of the hinges a, or other means may be provided for this purpose.
Pulling down upon either one of the handle bars or pulls (l 6 will cause the inner end of the lever D or the controlling-lever H, as the case may be, to be raised, and with this movement of the lever the outer end of the controlling-arm K will be raised, and said arm being pivotally connected to the gate and also engaging with the guide 7:, so as to play up and down therein, .the pivoted link L and the pivoted bell-crank lever M and rod N, which connects with the latch 0, will cause said latch to disengage itself with the gatepost C and the gate to swing open, and when the gate is half-way open the handle bar or pull may be released, after which the gate will automatically finish its circuit in either direction, as the case may be.
In describing the several details of construction of the gate and operating mechanism therefor 1 wish it distinctly understood that the invention is subject to many modifications or changes as circumstances would require and which may be resorted to without in any manner departing from the principle of the invention.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A swinging farm-gate and means for operating the same, comprising suitable upright posts, a horizontal controlling-lever pivotally connected to one of said posts and connecting with the opposite posts through the medium of suitable guides, an operating-lever pivotally connecting with the controlling-lever, a horizontal controlling-arm pivotally connected to the gate and suitably connected to the controlling-lever, a pivoted and adjustable link connecting with the horizontal controlling-arm, a pivoted bell-crank lever pivoted to the gate and to the end of thelink, aspringactuated latch, and a rod connecting the latch with the bell-crank lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A swinging farm-gate and means for operating the same, comprising suitable upright posts, a controlling-lever pivotally connected to one of said posts and connecting with the opposite post through the medium of suitable guides, an operating-lever pivotally connected to an arm extending from one of the posts, ahorizontal controlling-arm pivotally connected to the gate, a pitman-rod connecting said arm with the controlling-lever, a link adjustably and pivotally connecting with the horizontal controlling-arm, a bell-crank lever pivotally connected to the gate'and to the adjustable link, a spring-actuated latch having a hook and depending handle at its end, and a rod connecting the bell-crank lever with the latch through a loose connection whereby the latch may be made independent of the operating-lever's through the medium of a loose connectionv to enable said latch to be operated by hand, substantially as and for the purpose described. 10
