To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD B. TERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Payson, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Far1n Gate Attachment, of which the following a specification.
The present invention appert-ains to an attachment for farm gates, and relates particularly to a mechanism for opening and closing a gate as the gate is approached and passed, respectively.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved attachment applicable to various gates for opening and closing them from either side.
Another object of the invention is to provide in combination with means for opening and closing the gate, of means for locking the gate when closed and for automatically unlocking the same when the gate is swung open by the aforesaid means.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an attachment of the nature indicated which shall be comparatively simple, substantial, durable and inexpensive, which shall be readily applicable to various gates, and which shall be convenient, serviceable, and efficient in its use.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the descrip' tion proceeds, the present invention resides in the combination and arrangement; of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device as applied to a gate. Fig. 2

Referring specifically to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the upright or post to which the gate 2 is hinged, the free end of the gate normally standing adjoining the post 3, as usual. The gate structure may be of any well known type, the gate, as illustrated, comprising the stiles 5 and rails 1, although it is to be understood that the attachment is applicable to various gate structures with equal propriety and success.
In carrying out the invention, an upright or post 6 is planted or embedded in the soil at one side of the post 1, preferably within the inclosure of which the gate forms a part. A beam 7 is secured upon the upper ends of the uprights or posts 1 and (3 with its ends protruding as far beyond the posts as desirable. An eye or guide 8 is carried by the beam 7 intermediate the posts 1 and (3 while similar eyes 9 are carried by the respective ends of the beam, actuating cables or flexible elements 10 being threaded through the respective end eyes 9 and the intermediate eye 8 and having hand rings 11 attached to their outer ends. The inner ends of the cables 10 are attached to the gate 2 in a unique manner, as will hereinafter more fully a pear.
Coming particularly to the present invention, the same embodies a rod or rocking shaft 12 journaled to one side, preferably the inner side, of the gate 2 by means of staples or bearings 13 secured to the stiles of the gate. The inner end of the rod 1.2, which preferably terminates adjoining one of the stiles, is bent angular-1y, as at 14-, and a staple or stop 15 is secured to the respective stile of the gate and contacts with the angular end 14. of the rod to constrain the rod against sliding inwardly, the angular end '14 moving snugly between the stop 15 and the respective staple 13. The rod or shaft 12 is provided with a crank 16 adjoining its inner end, while a cam or ward 17 is attached to the outer end of the rod or shaft 12 beyond the free end of the gate.
The attachment also includes an actuating lever 18, which is preferably bent from a rod into U-shape, the intermediate portion or bend being journaled to the gate 2 above the inner end of the rod 12, by means of staples or bearings 19. The terminals or free end of the inner arm of the lever 18 is formed into an eye or loop 20 with which the inner ends of the cables 10 are engaged. A link 21. is pivoted to the extremity or free end of the outer arm of the lever 18, and has its upper end loosely connected to the crank 16 of the rod 12. The crank 16 and cam or ward 17 of the rod 12 extend approximately in similar directions, while the angular end 14 projects in a direction approximately at right angles to the said crank and cam, the lever 18 normally standing approximately at right angles to the gate. is employed a latch mounted upon the post 3. To this end, a short rod 22 is engaged intothe respective side of the post 8 directly above the outer end of the rod 12, and has attached to its outer or free end, a block or head 23. The latch proper embodies a wire or rod 24 doubled and having its arms or branches bent into elbows, the terminals of the wire or branches thereof being pivoted to the block or head 23, as seen in Fig. 1. The bight or bend of the wire 24 is adapted to normally seat on the rod 22 with the elbows depending into the path of the free end of the rod 12. A leaf spring 25 is preferably secured on the block or head 23 with its free end or tip bearing against the bight or bend of the latch 24 so as to yieldingly hold the free end of the latch depressed. vVhen the gate is closed, the free end of the rod 12, or the cam or ward 17 is adapted to snap under the elbows or free end of the latch to maintain the gate closed. When the rod 12 is swung due to the upward movement of the lever, the cam or ward 17 is adapted to raise the latch 24 to permit the gate to open. There is also preferably employed a latch 26 pivoted to the post 6 to engage the outer end or cam of the rod 12 when the gate is swung open, the latch 26 being preferably spring pressed by means of a coiled wire spring 2'? connecting it and the said post, a stop 28 being carried by the post to limit the movement of the latch 26. When the outer end or cam of the latch releasing rod 12 is engaged to the latch 26 upon the gate being opened, the upward movement of the lever 18 will raise the cam or ward 17 so as to liberate the latch 26 for permitting the gate to be swung closed.
In practice, the rings 11 will be ext-ended at suitable distances to the respective sides of the gate, in order that when the gate is approached by a vehicle or a person on horse back, the driver may readily reach the respective ring 11. By giving the respective cable 10 a sharp jerk, the lever 18 may be raised, so as to release the latch 24, and the momentum thus imparted to the gate will swing the gate open, against the post 6, the latch 26 engagin the outer end of the rod 12, or the cam l to maintain the gate in open position until the gate is passed. It will be observed that when the gate is in open position, the lever 18 will project beyond the beam 7, so that upon the respective cable 10 being pulled, the gate will be given a suflicient momentum to swing it to closed position. lVhen the gate is swung against the post 3, the latch 24 will again engage the rod 12 to lock the gate closed. it will thus be obvious that when the gate is pcned and closed by the respective actuating cords or cable, the respective latches will be released automatically, and will lock the gate in either open or closed position, whichever is the case. The angular end 14 of the rod 12 in contacting with the gate, or respective stile thereof, will serve to limit the upward swinging movement of the lever 18 in order that when the lever 18. is projected beyond the beam 7 when the gate is opened, the gate may be effectively swung to closed position without the lever 18 swinging excessively upward.
ltt is manifest that the present attachment will operate independent of the vertical adjustment of the gate, as long'as the latches are properly adjusted vertically, so that the gate, together with the latches, may be adjusted to the required height.
Other advantages and capabilities of the present invention will be apparent to those versed in the art, it being observed that the objects aimed at have been carried out satisfactorily, and that the present device provides a desirable one for the purposes for which it'is designed.
Havin thus described the invention, what claimed as new is:
in combination with a gate and a post adjoining the free end of the gate, a latch carried by the said post, a rod journaled to the gate, the outer end of the rod projecting beyond the free end of the gate to be engaged by the latch, the outer end of the rod having a ward to release the latch, the rod having a crank, a lever fulcrumed to the gate and normally standing atright angles thereto, a link connecting the lever and crank, and means connected to the said lever for swinging the gate and simultaneously raising the lever.
