To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LARNTINE (J. SWEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loami, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gate-operating apparatus, and has for its object to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
WVith these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, of the improved device with the gate in closed position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base member of the gate-operating mechanism detached. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of the hinge-post and a portion of the gate, together with portions of the connecting mechanism, the latter partially in section.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved apparatus herein shown and described may be applied to any of the various forms and constructions of gates which swing from one end, but is more particularly applicable to the class of such structures known as farm gates arranged to be actuated from a distance by the person desiring to pass therethrough and without the necessity for alighting or dismounting and for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a gate of this class.
The drawings show a hinge-post and latch-post 11 disposed at opposite sides of the gateway-opening and from which the fence structure (represented at 13) extends in the usual manner.
Attached rigidly, as by bolts 14, to the upper end of the post 10 is a base-plate 15, extending toward the latch-post 11 and also extending in the opposite direction and provided with lateral extensions 16 17. Rising from the base-frame is a stud 18, upon which a frame 19 is mounted to swing and supported by the base-frame and its lateral extensions 1617.
The gate (represented as a whole at 20) is mounted to swing between the inwardly-projecting end of the base-frame 15, as by a stud 21 extending through the base-frame and a stud 22 bearing in a bracket 23 on the post 10. The swinging frame 19 is formed with a segmental gear rack 24 concentric with the stud 18, and the stud 21 is extended upwardly for carrying a pinion 25 for engagement by the rack 24. By this arrangement it will be obvious that when the frame 19 is swung the rack 24 will'operate the pinion 25 and open and close the gate, as hereinafter more fully explained.
The frame 19 extends rearwardly of the post 10 and is provided at the rear end with cableguide members, preferably in the form of pulleys 26 27 and the extensions 16 17 of the base-frame 15 are provided with vertical stops 28 29, the latter connected by a brace-bar 30, bearing over the upper face of the swinging frame 19. Attached to the pinion 25 is a cableguide, preferably in the form of an eyebolt or pin 31.
Attached to the latch-post 11 is an arm 32, extending transversely of the same and provided with swinging latches 33 34, and the gate 20 is provided with a latch-bar 35, slidable longitudinally of the gate for projection by a spring 36, with its outer end between the swinging latch members 33 34. The latch-bar 35 is formed with a notch 37 with which engages a pawl 38 on a bar or lever 39, pivoted at 40 to the gate 20 and extending above the same, as shown, and also preferably provided with a spring 41 to supplement the action of the spring 36.
A draw cord or cable 42is connected at one end to the upper end of the lever 39 and extends thence through the guide member 31 of the pinion 25 and is connected at 43 to two draw cords or cables 44 45, extending thence around the guide-pulleys 26 27 and thence in opposite directions over guide-pulleys upon posts spaced from the gate at sufficient distances to enable the cables to be operated by persons approaching the gate in the usual manner.
A post is shown at 46 with a guide-pulley 47 thereon to receive the draw-cord 45, the draw-cord having a Weighted handle 48 to take up the slack of the cord and maintain the same in a relatively taut condition.

The spaced stop-posts will each preferably be provided with an arm 49, carrying a latch 50 to engage the free end of the latch-bar 35 when the gate is opened and hold the same detachably in open position.
The divided cables 44 45 are provided with stop members 52 53 for bearing against the frames of the pulleys 26 27, and thus limiting the movements of the cables, as hereinafter explained.
With the gate thus constructed the operation is as follows: The operator approaching from either direction draws upon the handle 48, first causing the lever 39 to withdraw the latch-bar 35 from between the swinging latch members 33 34 and moving the stop member 52 or 53 into engagement with the frames of the guide-pulleys 26 27, so that the continued pulling of the draw-cord will cause frame 19 to swing upon its pivot 18 and likewise cause the rack 24 to operate the pinion and open the gate, the movement of the gate continuing until the latch-bar 35 engages one of the catch members 50, care being taken to release the draw-cable just before the end of the movement of the gate, so that the springs 36 41 may throw the latch-bar into operative position relative to the stop-post latch member. As the operator passes through the gates he pulls the other draw-cord, which action will release the latch-bar and swing the gate into closed position, the latch members 33 34 on the post 11 yielding to the latch-bar and holding the gate closed.
The construction is simple, strong, and durable, composed of few parts, and may be inexpensively manufactured and erected wherever such a structure is required.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a gate-operating apparatus, a baseframe having lateral extensions provided with vertical stops at the ends, a frame swinging upon said base-frame and supported by said extensions and alternately bearing against said stops at the ends of its movements, said swinging frame formed with a segmental gear-rack atone end, a brace member connecting said stop members and extending above said swinging frame, a gate mounted to swing from said base-frame, a pinion carried by said gate and engaging said segment, and draw-cables con nected to said swinging frame and leading to points convenient to the operator approaching the gate. 1
2. In a gate-operating apparatus, a hingepost at one side and a latch-post at the opposite side of a gateway-opening, a base-frame connected to said hinge-post and extending from opposite sides of the same, a frame swinging from said base-frame and supported thereby and formed with a gear-segment at one end and with cable-guide members at the other end, a gate mounted to swing from said base-frame, a latch mechanism carried by the free end of said gate for detachable engagement with said latch-post, a pinion carried by said gate and engaging said segment, a cableguide carried by said pinion, a cable connected at one end to said latch mechanism and leading through said cable-guide, two cables connected to the free ends of said latch-cable and extending thence through the guide members of said frame and stops connected to said divided cables for bearing against said frame cable-guide members to limit the movement of the cable.
