Description

.HICKMAN.
Gates.
Patented Decc 2,1873.
tnesses @QMV a6 /m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJAH HIGKMAN, OF BED BLUFF, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
LSpecification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 145,104, dated DecemberQ, 1873; application tiled October 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, ELIJAH HICKMAN, of Bed Bluff, Tehama county, State o1 California, have invented an Improved Gate; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invent-ion relates to an improvement in farm-gates; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of a gate pivot-ed by a vertical central post so as to swing about it when operated by its connecting-ropes and weight. My invention further consists in a novel latch, which is easily operated by the ropes for opening the gate from either side.
,Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my gate. Fig. 2 is a front view.
A A are two posts, standing one on each side of the travelled way. B is a central post, which is `journaled in a step at the bottom, and also in the beam C above. The gate eX- tends upon each side of this post B, through which its bars pass and terminate in the post I), each part of the gate being wide enough to close a way suicient for a carriage to pass. Posts A A support the beam G, and also carry the catches. into which the latchfastens. Two other posts, F F, stand on a line with the post B, between the two roadways formed, and the posts have pulleys G, over which ropes H pass, one leading from the end of one gate, while the other leads from the end of the other gate, as shown. Another rope, I, leads from the end of one of the gates and passes over a pulley, J, upon one of the posts, and tothis rope a weight, K, is attached. This weight serves to close the gate after being opened. The
gate is fastened or secured by a latch which consists of one bar, O, of the ate pivoted to oscillate about its center w ere it passes through the post B. One of the ropes H passes over a pulley or through an eye, L, at the top of the gate, and thence extends down to the' latch, to which :it is fastened. When a team arrives at the gate upon this side, this rope is pulled, and lifts the latch from the catch on the post A. By pulling upon the rope the gate will be opened in that direction, and the rope must be retained in the hand until the carriage or vehicle is beyond the gateway, when, by releasing it, the weight K will close the gate. 'lne rope 11, at the other end, serves in the same manner to open the gate to teams from the other direction. As the latch at this end opens downward, the rope must be carried over a pulley, M, just below the latch, and thence up to the latch, to which it is secured, so that when this rope is pulled it will pull the latch downward before opening the gate. A spring, P, serves to insure the action of the latch in closing.
The whole device is simple, and not liable to .derangement, and operates easily and in a satisfactory manner.
Having thus described' my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The double gate, with its central revolving post B, in combination with its operating ropes H H, which unlatch and open the gate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
